Job description
Head Herdsperson – Pembridge, Leominster, Herefordshire
We are seeking anHead Herdspersonto join our team inPembridge, Leominster.
You will be working directly for the farm, not through REAL Success.
Our Farm
Our family-run farm in the Arrow Valley of Herefordshire comprises of a 600-cow autumn block calving, grass-based dairy herd milked through a rotary parlour. The dairy herd is made up of robust easy calving animals based on the New Zealand style of grassland management and breeding. We also run a 500kw anaerobic digester which uses all our dairy slurry along with manure from our broiler chicken unit and some purpose grown crops to generate electricity and heat. We work closely with our neighboring farms and manage around 400ha at this unit. We also run a herd of horned Hereford cattle consisting of 20 breeding cows.
Your role
As the Head Herdsperson, you will be working closely with the current Dairy Manager, supporting with the overall cow operation. AI & Foot trimming experience is preferred but not essential, other roles and responsibilities include.
- Daily management of the herd and ensuring animal welfare is the top priority.
- Implementing the agreed Financial Budget and the Strategic Plan for the farm with the dairy manager
- Supporting the Dairy manager in achieving the farm production targets, including milk production, Improving cow genetics and the breeding of the dairy herd
- Assisting with dry cow management, calving cows and colostrum protocols.
- Liaising with Vets, nutritionists and consultants for the farm.
- Keeping the overall farm tidy and safe to operate. Ensuring health and safety legislations are met daily.
- Farm site & machinery maintenance
- Keeping basic records and compliance up to date.
A full UK driving license and a UK right to work are required for this role.
You
The right person will need to demonstrate experience in dairy management and agriculture, whilst also sharing the same values as our farm.
