In addition to your salary, you will be paid a Retention and Recruitment Allowance of £250.00 per month until 31stAugust 2025. This will be paid monthly alongside your salary each month and will be pensionable and subject to tax and National Insurance deductions.The Humanities Department at Outwood Academy HemsworthThe Humanities department comprises 8 teachers including a Head of Faculty, a Second in Faculty, a Vice Principal, experienced teaching staff as well as ECT teachers. Most humanities lessons are taught in a dedicated building, with each teacher having their own classroom base. The building has its own staff room with kitchen facilities, as well as meeting space and rooms for intervention work. We also have a dedicated space for post-16 students to work in. Classrooms are fully equipped with interactive televisions and visualisers to support teaching and learning. The continuing professional development of staff is important here at Outwood Academy Hemsworth. Staff have access to a wide range of CPD, including a 6 day History Matters and Geography Matters course, as well as a number of one-off sessions focusing on teaching strategies and curriculum. Providing students with out of classroom opportunities is a key focus for the department, and we currently provide opportunities for post-16 students to take part in the Lessons from Auschwitz programme. Year 9 students hold discussions with veterans from global conflicts and year 7 students assess the sustainability of the academy and the local community.In History, the Key Stage Three curriculum is diverse and unique. Students have 1 hour per week in year 7 and 2 hours in years 8 and 9. Topics include the impact of the British Empire in India and the importance of our own Grade II listed historical site, Hemsworth Hall.History is a popular option subject at GCSE where we follow the Edexcel specification. The units we cover are Medicine in Britain 1250-Present and the British Sector of the Western Front 1914-18 Injuries, treatment and the trenches; Early Elizabethan England 1558-88 and The American West 1835-95; Weimar and Nazi Germany 1918-39.We also offer History at A Level. We teach the AQA specification and cover exam units in Tsarist and Communist Russia, 1855-1964 and Wars and Welfare, Britain in Transition 1906-#####.Our Geography curriculum at KS3 is engaging and designed to help broaden the horizons of our students. Students are challenged to learn about physical and human processes and the interaction between them. Enquiries include ‘How am I linked to climate change’ and ‘Is tourism a blessing or a curse?’ We are currently increasing the amount of GIS at KS3 and post-Covid, we have big plans for KS3 fieldwork to increase the opportunities available to our students.Geography is an increasingly popular option subject at GCSE where we follow the AQA specification.
