ISLI ESAP (Science and Geography)The University of Reading is seeking an External Examiner in the following English for Specific Academic Purposes modules within the International Study and Language Institute (ISLI).English for Specific Academic Purposes (NUIST)This suite of discipline-specific modules delivered at NUIST Reading Academy (China) aims to equip students with the lexical knowledge and communication skills needed to learn their subject at Level 4 in English.IL1ASNU (formerly IF1NUA) – English for Atmospheric ScienceIL1EENU (formerly IF1NUE) – English for Environmental EngineersIF1GISNU (formerly IF1NUG) – English for Human and Physical GeographersIF1ACNU (formerly IF1NUC) – English for ChemistsFB2CAL – English for Science – Part 2This module is delivered at the University of Reading for international students whose first language is not English, and who have arrived on Part 2 or Part 3 as visiting students or as part of a 2+2 undergraduate Food Science programme. The module recognises the need to continue language development for students whose first language is not English, and to develop both their academic and professional skills in the UK Food Science context to which they are transitioning.We are looking for a candidate, preferably with expertise in teaching / convening similar subjects. The post is for 4 years with a possible extension to a maximum of 5 years. Starting date September 2024 TBC.Application Criteria:External Examiners should normally be able to show evidence of the following:knowledge and understanding of UK sector agreed reference points for the maintenance of academic standards and assurance and enhancement of quality;competence and experience in the fields covered by the programme of study or parts thereof;relevant academic and/or professional qualifications to at least the level of the qualification being externally examined, and/or extensive practitioner experience where appropriate;competence and experience relating to designing and operating a variety of assessment tasks appropriate to the subject and operating assessment procedures;sufficient standing, credibility and breadth of experience within the discipline to be able to command the respect of academic peers, and, where appropriate, professional peers;familiarity with the standard to be expected of students to achieve the award which is to be assessed;fluency in English, and, where programmes are delivered and assessed in languages other than English, fluency in the relevant language(s) (unless other secure arrangements are in place to ensure that External Examiners are provided with the information to make their judgements);meeting applicable criteria set by professional, statutory or regulatory bodies;awareness of current developments in the design and delivery of relevant curricula;competence and experience relating to the enhancement of the student learning experience.The University’s Centre for Quality Support and Development runs a briefing session for external examiners who are new to the University of Reading.
