Please note that it is Midlothian Council’s policy that successful applicants will be appointed to the first point on the salary scale.
Based on you working 36 hours over 52 weeks per year the minimum actual salary for this position is £40,349.75 per annum.
Midlothian Council has an opportunity for an enthusiastic and self-motivated Environmental Health Officer to join our Business Regulation Team specifically working with the Food & Safety Unit. The team carries out regulatory functions in the areas of food safety, health and safety, and communicable disease to assist in providing a safe and healthy environment for people in Midlothian.
This role will allow for the growth and development of the successful individual.
Midlothian Council is a semi-rural authority located immediately south of the City of Edinburgh and is the fastest growing Local Authority in Scotland.
The role will be delivered on a hybrid working model giving the successful applicant the opportunity to combine working from home, in the field and in the office.
KNOWLEDGE
It is essential that you hold a degree in Environmental Health along with a post graduate diploma from REHIS or equivalent.
Travel throughout the area is an essential part of your job, so a driving licence and use of a car are pre-requisite.
We may consider applicants who have either;
a) Obtained the degree above and are scheduled to sit their professional examinations in September 2024, or
b) Qualified as a Food Safety Officer
in either case a or b above the salary will be reduced to the appropriate grading.
EXPERIENCE
Knowledge and experience of working in the fields of food safety, health and safety and communicable disease coupled with theoretical knowledge across all Environmental Health functions is desirable.
Also an understanding of the practical application of statutory regulations with an understanding of forthcoming proposed initiatives / developments / legislation.
It is desirable that candidates are a Chartered Member of the Royal Environmental Health Institute of Scotland or equivalent (or member of REHIS willing to work towards chartered status).
