Commercial EH&TS team is a small team with a large number of statutory targets to meet. The team regulates food hygiene and standards, health and safety in the workplace, Infectious Disease Control and Smoke Free legislation. We are looking for an all-round officer that will help us meet our statutory targets and improve the well-being of our local communities by ensuring Haringey is a safe and secure place to live.
To demonstrate the minimum competencies that support food control in accordance with the Food Law Codes of Practice (Competency 9) namely:
Understands sampling methodologies and is able to gather samples according to PHE/FSA protocol
Can demonstrate an understanding of how to identify food hazards and gather accurate information. Can identify when appropriately high tier officers need to intervene
Can demonstrate the communication skills needed to engage with stakeholders and signpost to sources of information and guidance
Is able to locate current sources of guidance for food hygiene and standards. Provide service users and stakeholders with comprehensive advice, guidance, and information on all aspects of the team’s service delivery as well as any relevant wider cross-cutting council services
To respond to complaints about food safety, health and safety, infectious disease, licensing, public health and smoke-free using a risk-based approach.
Utilize the appropriate investigative and evaluation techniques to assess hazards and risks and determine the nature, cause, remedy, and urgency of the problem and rectification.
Deliver through inspections, monitoring, surveillance, verification, audit, and sampling the team service plans in relation to low-risk businesses.
Prepare Enforcement Notices in order to obtain compliance.
Participate in publicity campaigns, customer service improvement plans and joint initiatives across Council services and with other agencies as directed.
Ensure that you fully understand and remain proficient in the use of all the Service IT and Data recording systems.
In line with the Council’s Governance policy ensure all records, information, and evidence are gathered, stored, and recorded correctly.
Ensure that all data is recorded effectively and accurately on the Council’s recording systems in order to contribute to performance delivery.
Contribute to the Directorate and Business Unit’s statutory service and business plans.
Take responsibility for the development and enhancement of your knowledge and skillset through CPD and training.
To assist the Council in liaising with residents, businesses, members, external partners in all matters related to Environmental Health including FOI and Enquiries.
Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience
Knowledge
Possess a high standard of numeracy, literacy, and grammatical accuracy.
Have a basic knowledge of all environmental health legislative controls and enforcement tools and their legal basis relevant to the team, together with their proper practical implementation in the context of an English unitary local authority.
Possess an in-depth and current knowledge of the principles of risk assessment and control, and its proper practical implementation in at least one specialized area of environmental health.
Possess an in-depth and current knowledge of the principles of quality systems, and its proper practical implementation.
Possess an in-depth and current knowledge of the technical, scientific, environmental and health aspects of at least one specialized area of environmental health.
Possess the skills to lead, coordinate and communicate effectively.
Qualifications
Higher Certificate in Food Control (HCFC) or Higher Certificate in food premises inspections (HCFP) or a suitable qualification as outlined in the Food Code of Practice.
Certificate of Registration of the Environmental Health Registration Board.
Desirable
MSc/BSc/Diploma in Environmental Health.
Registration as a Chartered Environmental Health Practitioner or the equivalent experience.
Maintenance of competency requirements in respect of the CIEH (CPD), RDNA, FSA, HSE or relevant body.
Membership of chartered or professional organization, preferably chartered status, or holder of post-graduate qualification (or equivalent) related to the role.
Training for Trainers or the Equivalent
Skills
Possession of a full current driving license.

Demonstrate acute self-awareness of strengths, weaknesses, and how to interact effectively with others.
