Design Engineer
Reporting to
Design Manager
Job Responsibility
To be part of the Engineering design team in delivering commercially and technically accurate designs in a timely manner.
Design Engineer Job Duties:
Be responsible for the production of the electrical design associated with a specific project
Review client specifications and produce an initial single line diagram.
Produce a bill of quantities of equipment in line with relevant IEC, DNO, IDNO and client specifications
Interface with and attend meeting with client, IDNO or DNO
Prepare and issue designs to for approval
Design HV substation layouts and elevations
Produced detailed earthing layouts and electrical system standards.
Design HV protection and control systems.
Development and review of the single line diagrams
Production of AC and DC schematic drawings, cable block diagrams, cable and termination schedules
Produce high level specifications for control, protection and SCADA systems.
Manage the detailed design of HV and LV power cable systems
Liaise with external design houses and consultancies to produce accurate designs
Develop HV system studies including protection coordination, arc flash, voltage regulation, load flow and fault level reports.
Produce detailed specifications for high voltage equipment including transformers, switchboards, circuit breakers, disconnectors, current and voltage transformers
Produce detailed specifications for ancillary plant and equipment associated with high voltage substations including auxiliary transformers, battery systems, LVAC boards, multicore cables.
Review equipment manufacturers proposals and liaise with equipment manufacturers to ensure equipment suitability in line with the proposed design.
Approve and issue approved design for construction
Input into the contract project plan, reporting progress as necessary and identifying any risks to the project progress and completion dates.
Ensure that the law is complied with at all times, including Electricity at Work, H&S, ESQCR and CDM Regulations.
Maintaining professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.
Skills and Qualifications:
Degree or HNC in Electrical Engineering
Member of The IET
Chartered Engineer or working towards Chartership
Working knowledge of office software – word, excel, power point, AutoCad, MS Project
Advantageous: working knowledge of design software: Revit, CDEGS etc

Additional Project Engineer / Senior Designer Duties
Overall responsibility for the engineering design on the project
Direct contact with client as Company representative
Coordinate project requirements at design stage with civil, electrical, protection & control designers
Coordinate design with clients agents, sub-contractors, consultants and designers
Lead project from commencement until the construction project manager takes over
Configure and maintain the project program through the design phase of the project
Preparation of design phase safety documentation on the projects including PSDP contact person role, completion of design risk assessments and preliminary safety and health plans where necessary
Prepare and issue designs to client, DNO and IDNO for approval
Produce design approval packages and management of the design approval process with the UK DNO’s
Issuing guidance on the specific project electrical safety requirements
Produce detailed technical reports to accompany our design approval submissions explaining in a clear and concise manner the operation of the proposed connection arrangement.

Mentor junior members of staff
Interface with and support the estimating department
