Director of Producing and Programming at Birmingham Repertory TheatreBased: BirminghamSalary: £50,000 per annumPosition: Director of Producing and Programming Job Role: The Director of Producing and Programming leads The Rep’s Producing Team and works closely with the Artistic and Associate Directors to develop Rep-led productions and co-productions and programme visiting productions. Our vision is to be a theatre for everyone and our artistic strategy is to create artistically ambitious popular theatre.The Director of Producing & Programming will lead a team producing around 10 shows a year and programming an exciting mix of visiting productions. Many Rep productions go on to enjoy future life through transfers and tours and the ambition is that this will increase. The artistic programme also encompasses talent development and creative learning and the role has oversight of productions across these areas too.The Rep is the only producing theatre in Birmingham and as such plays a unique role in the city’s cultural landscape. Birmingham is one of the youngest and most multicultural cities in Europe, with a dynamism and energy at its core. This ‘City of a Thousand Trades’ has undergone a renaissance in recent years and now ranks as the joint second most globally influential city in the UK after London.Our mission at The Rep is to create a programme that is representative and inclusive of the city we serve, and we aim to imaginatively engage with the people of Birmingham and beyond to create productions that fill our theatres with people. Purpose of Post: The Director of Producing & Programming works closely with the Artistic, Associate and Executive Directors to develop and deliver a programme of productions, co-productions and visiting productions across the House, Studio and Door auditoria that resonate with and reflect the rich diversity of the city. The role will build on the resurgence of The Rep over the past few years and continue to deliver productions which uphold the highest artistic standards for the widest possible audience. Main Duties and Responsibilities: Producing & ProgrammingWork closely with the Artistic, Associate and Executive Directors to initiate, develop, plan and schedule productions across all three auditoria within agreed financial parametersAssign Lead Producing responsibility for projects to members of the Producing Team and personally lead produce at least one production each yearManage the pipeline of productions and projects, establishing systems for collating, evaluating and developing producing proposalsIn liaison with the Artistic, Associate and Executive Directors oversee the curation of an exciting and relevant programme of visiting productions for the House, Studio and DoorIdentify and develop relationships with potential co-producing partners across the commercial and funded theatre sectors regionally, nationally and internationallySecure and negotiate co-producing deals with a range of partnersManage and develop relationships with key stakeholders including co-producers, agents, creatives, actors, companiesLead the process of delivering productions, maintaining oversight of production processes and regularly updating the Artistic Director and Executive DirectorEnsure productions reflect The Rep’s commitment to diversity and work proactively to ensure that the demographic of the city and the many diverse voices of its residents are represented in productions across all three stagesContribute to creative team and casting discussions and decisionsOversee the delivery of regional, national and international tours, managing and overseeing the work of independent producers and partnersProactively seek future life potential for Rep productions nationally and internationallyWork closely with the Director of Production to ensure productions are delivered to the highest production standards within available budgetsWork closely with Associate Director and Creative Learning Director to ensure support for talent development and creative learning productions is integrated into the work of the Producing TeamWork closely with the Executive Director to set producing budgets within the parameters of the theatre’s annual budgetManage the annual Producing budget, reporting in to the Executive Director on a monthly basisLead contract negotiations with co-producers on all financial and contractual matters, including production enhancement, royalties, payment schedules, future life terms and other contract terms and conditionsDraft budgets (or commission the drafting of budgets from members of the Producing Team) for all productions and co-productions ensuring financial viability before projects are green-litOnce projects are green-lit manage productions within budget, monitoring expenditure against budget and providing regular forecasts to the Executive Director and Finance DirectorSupport the Marketing Department to develop income targets for all productionsWork closely with the Finance Director to ensure the correct accounting of productions and to maximise recovery of Theatre Production Tax ReliefNegotiate deal terms with Visiting Managers which balance the creative range of the programme with income targetsOther ProducingSupport the Marketing Department in the development of marketing assets and campaignsAttend industry fora, events and shows to network and keep abreast of theatre trends and practiceChair meetings as requiredEnsure effective administration systems are in place to support productionsLine Management & Strategic ResponsibilitiesLead the work of the Producing Team and line manage a teamContribute to the strategic and operational running of The Rep as a member of the Senior Leadership TeamContribute to the development and delivery of The Rep’s Business PlanProvide content for Board reports, Arts Council reports and reports for other stakeholders as requiredContribute to organisational development initiativesUphold The Rep’s values in all aspects of your workAll
