Job Title: Destination Coventry Director
Reports To: Chief Executive Officer
Job Type: Fixed Term Contract – 31st March 2025
Working Pattern: Full Time, 37 Hours per week
Salary Range: £69,000 per annum + £6,000 Car Allowance p/a
Additional: Eligible for Company Bonus Scheme

Job Objectives:
· Raise the profile of Coventry as a visitor destination and centre for arts and events, to develop and promote effective partnership working with a range of partners within and outside the Council.
· Developing Strategies for both Destination Coventry and the City Council including, but not limited to, a Tourism Strategy; Destination Management Plan; Business Engagement Strategy; and Accommodation Study. To contribute to the development of the Coventry & Warwickshire Destination Partnership (LVEP) and delivery of the Growth Plan for the LVEP geography.
· To promote and embed tourism and destination service objectives into wider partnership work focused on developing Coventry as a city and destination of distinction.
· Providing strategic advice to the board, chairperson, and City Council Representatives to give them an accurate view of the market, local business issues and broader tourism agenda.
· Preparing and implementing a 3 Year business plan for Destination Coventry and ensuring cost-effective operations and market development activities.
· Ensuring company policies and legal guidelines are communicated from the top down in the company and that they are followed at all times.
· Being a confident and trusted face of the business and communicating and maintaining relationships with a wide range of stakeholders, business partners, and public sector partners.
· Overseeing the company’s financial performance, budget management, commercial revenue and external funding opportunities.
· Delegating responsibilities and supervising the work of the Destination Coventry team and providing guidance and motivation to drive excellent team performance.
· Possessing strong crisis management skills to protect Destination Coventry in times of need.
· Acting as the public speaker and public relations representative of Destination Coventry in ways that strengthen its profile and reputation of Coventry City and wider areas.
· Lead the integration of Destination Coventry into a development of, and management of, a Destination Partnership for Coventry.
· To commission, manage and oversee work on behalf of the Partnership.
· Maintain a detailed understanding of national, regional and sub-regional tourism policies and priorities. Advise and translate this into local policy priorities. Where appropriate, lead the Council’s and Destination Partnership’s input to the development of national, regional and sub-regional destination and tourism policies and related economic development policies.
· Investigate, develop and lead on major projects, initiatives and events aimed at profiling and promoting the City and/or enhancing opportunities for economic growth in Coventry (e.g. through national and international partnership delegations, trade shows, familiarisation trips).
· Liaise with the Destination Partnership Chair, senior Council managers and Elected Members on tourism, destination, local business investment and visitor economy growth issues. Write briefing notes and reports and present at internal Council and external partnership meetings as required.
· Working closely with colleagues across the Council’s Sports, Culture and Destination Service and wider partnership bodies, lead on promoting greater awareness of local conferencing, sports and cultural opportunities and events through designing and implementing destination marketing and visitor information services for the city.
· Manage staff, including in the formulation of partnership/service delivery plans and staff work programmes. To be responsible for the recruitment, training, development and motivation of appointed staff members, within the framework of the City Council's Investing in People Policy and Departmental performance management programmes.
· Ensure the compilation, recording, analysis and distribution of reports, statistics and information required to achieve both the Service Plan and strategic priorities of local destination partners.
· Any other duties and responsibilities within the range of the salary grade.
Person Specification:
Knowledge:
· Comprehensive knowledge of the structure and funding of key destination and tourism sectors in the UK and related, national, regional and local economic development policies and priorities.
· Comprehensive knowledge of the roles different organisations play in developing destinations and destination management (e.g. VisitBritain, VisitEngland, Local Visitor Economy Partnerships, Destination Management Organisations, local authorities and Chambers of Commerce).
· Detailed knowledge of issues relating to destination management and tourism services provision.
· Detailed understanding of the work, funding and policies of key partner organisations.
· A good knowledge and understanding of strategies for developing and maintaining commercial and sponsorship partnerships.
· A good working knowledge of the processes around external grant resources and service contracts – bidding, management, evidencing and evaluation.
· Knowledge of performance management techniques and an understanding of how these can be applied to tourism and destination services.
· Knowledge of research, consultation and evaluation techniques and how they can be applied within tourism and destination services.
· An understanding of modern local government, particularly relating to corporate performance and working through partnerships.

· Substantial destination management experience and a proven track record of achievements gained through forming and working in partnerships within the field (e.g. with national organisations, destination management organisations, private sector partners, local venues, hotels, conferencing partners).
· Leading, motivating and managing a team of people to achieve results. Experience of supervising staff including setting work programmes and providing clear direction to achieve defined standards.
· Experience of developing and implementing partnership strategies and development plans within the destination and tourism sectors.
· Working collaboratively with private, public and voluntary sectors to deliver client-led initiatives aimed at tackling economic inactivity and/or developing local economic growth in relevant sectors.
· Experience of successfully managing major complex projects and programmes in partnership with stakeholders, to achieve desired outcomes.
· Experience of preparing funding bids and raising funds from a variety of sources to support tourism and destination initiatives or programmes.
· Experience of forming commercial partnerships and raising sponsorship to deliver partner and/or Service priorities.
· Experience of managing commercial and sponsor relationships to ensure the successful fulfilment of different stakeholders’ objectives and desired outcomes.
· Developing and delivering business and resource plans in a complex environment.
· Negotiating with and influencing partners, Government, funders and client groups.
· Degree or equivalent qualification in a related subject or substantial experience in the field.
· Willing to work flexibly in relation to hours, including unsociable hours, evenings, weekends, and occasional overnight stays.
· Ability to travel to meetings and events around the Coventry area, but also to travel nationally and internationally from time to time to support the delivery of partnership and/or Service outcomes.
