We are seeking to recruit a Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) to join the team at one of our automotive training centres based in Milton Keynes, specifically working with a prestige automotive manufacturer apprenticeship programme with over 600 live learners.
This is a full-time permanent contract, and the role is ideally suited to candidates with existing Safeguarding experience (preferably as a DSL, and with apprentices).
The role of the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) is defined in Keeping Apprentices Safe in Education (#####) –
The roles and responsibilities outlined by KCSE will be added as an addendum to the job description of the appointed DSL, and it will be updated in line with any relevant changes/updates made by the DfE Guidance at any time.
The Department for Education Guidance states that:
“The designated safeguarding lead should take lead responsibility for safeguarding and child protection (including online safety). This should be explicit in the role holder’s job description. This person should have the appropriate status and authority within the programme to carry out the duties of the post. They should be given the time, funding, training, resources and support to provide advice and support to other staff on child welfare and child protection matters, to take part in strategy discussions and inter-agency meetings, and/or to support other staff to do so, and to contribute to the assessment of apprentices”.
Purpose of Job
It is every employee’s responsibility to promote and safeguard the welfare of children and young persons he/she is responsible for or comes into contact with. Therefore, every employee will be required to hold a current enhanced DBS (Disclosure & Barring Scheme) certificate.
As the safeguarding Lead you will provide professional advice and support on safeguarding matters to staff and associates, and ensure the organisation is fully compliant in their safeguarding case management and statutory duty and responsibilities.
You will also manage safeguarding casework as well as liaising and meeting with external bodies, and occasionally delivering training.
Qualifications & Experience
Experience of working in a role where safeguarding/child protection is a key element (Essential)
Understanding of current legislation around safeguarding in particular within Apprenticeships (Essential)
Knowledge of Keeping children safe in education (KCSiE) (Essential)
Prevent duty (Essential)
Knowledge of Ofsted (Essential)
Able to build strategic relationships both internally and externally (Essential)
To work as part of a team rota at evenings and weekends providing support and guidance as required (Desirable)
Experience of working in Apprenticeship Training Provider (Desirable)
Knowledge of multi-agency working and partnership (Desirable)

Pre-employment Checks
Calex will undertake the relevant/standard employment checks with any successful candidate. This includes contacting all nominated references, as well as checking candidate ID, driving licence (if appropriate) and right to work in the UK. Some roles may also be subject to further pre-employment checks (confirmation will be provided through the recruitment process). This nature if this role will necessitate that we undertake a DBS check.
Employment
The successful candidate will be employed by Calex UK (www.calexuk.com). Calex are a specialist automotive training provider and provide training staff including Technical Trainers and Administrators to several automotive manufacturers in the UK.
Place of Work & Hours
Milton Keynes. There will also be times when it may be necessary to work from home, or from an alternative client location (such as Dealers/Retailers, or Hotel).
Typical working hours: Monday to Friday, 40 hours per week. The successful candidate will be required to monitor an out of hours emergency phone line. This will include taking calls from the hotel on Sunday evenings to monitor arrivals/non-arrivals; providing guidance to the hotel on any safeguarding or other incidents, as well as taking calls from apprentices who contact in an emergency.
Salary & Benefits
