As a Design Manager you will be responsible for the detailed structural design functions of secured projects within the business, reporting directly to companies Pre-Construction Director.
Duties will be as per job description below:
Ensure that our clients specification has been interrupted, extrapolated, coordinated within our design intent.
Solving engineering challenges using extensive detailed design experience and knowledge of the relevant design codes & CDM requirements.
Reviewing design information issued by the Pre-Construction department for detailed design, highlighting any commercial risks to the business.
Identifying any outstanding information required for detailed design via RFI process, liaising with our Document Controller to obtain the missing information.
Arrange and/or attend design team meetings, as required.
Manage external design teams, ensuring deadlines, quality and design budgets are met.
Pro-actively manage detailed design programme, releasing information to the Geotechnical department in a timely manner, to ensure committed dates are hit and the site teams have the required information two weeks prior to requirement.
Check SPEEDECK detailed drawings, specifications, schedules, and calculations against SDF Check Lists, investigate and report on changes.
Issue approved SDF design drawings and report to Document Controller for external issue.
Monitor design changes, design budget and deviation from original scope and report changes to Pre-Construction, completing and approving a document change control register.
Ensuring all design team members take financial responsibility in design.
Liaise closely with client’s design team to pro-actively resolve any design issues.
Produce Design Risk Assessments where required.
Create detailed written specifications, where required.
Support site teams with Engineering, to resolve any design/detail/construction problems quickly and as required.
Attend weekly Design Team Meeting with Pre-Construction Director to report design progress, fee overspends, and difficulties encountered.
Complete monthly site visit, to review work in the field and report findings.
Collaborate with fellow colleagues to ensure that the most commercially advantageous engineering concepts/methodology is proposed whilst remaining technically complaint.
Personal Qualities required:
Chartership essential, and ongoing membership of a relevant Engineering Institution
10+ Years of UK Based Design experience
Excellent knowledge of construction methods and regulations
Experience in design and detailing of RC structures to BS and EC
Ability to multi-task and manage multiple projects.
Ability to manage others
Excellent inter-personal skills and team player, as well as ability to work alone with minimal supervision
Strong organisational skills and attention to detail
Strong IT skills –Bluebeam and Microsoft Office essential. (Excel & Word)
Willing to take ownership of a work task, produce the information required to high standard, within the time scales set
Confident communicator
Ability to learn and self-improve
Proficient in the use of AutoCAD and Sofistik, with practical knowledge in the foundation industry
Must have an engineering background with a degree in Structural Engineering – BEng, MEng or MSc
