British Antarctic Survey (BAS) is looking for an outstanding Deck Engineer to join the crew of the RRS Sir David Attenborough. BAS delivers and enables world-leading interdisciplinary research in the Polar Regions. The ship is world leading in its scientific capabilities and regularly carries out science trials across the world with a driven focus on the Antarctic regions.You’ll be responsible for the maintenance and functionality of the ship’s fixed scientific machinery, ship’s cranes, cargo tender and workboat machinery, fully utilising the Planned Maintenance System.Within the role, there will be an opportunity to develop role specific skills to compliment your time on the ship. There will also be standard training provided that is specially developed for Polar travel. You’ll be joining a world-leading interdisciplinary research organisation, that is committed to recruiting talented people like you, progressing your career and giving you the support, you need to thrive at BAS.Your main responsibilities will include:To liaise with the Polar Chief Engineer, Chief Officer and Principal Scientific Officer to best ensure the correct operation and availability of the ship's fixed scientific machinery including, traction winches, gantries, towing platforms, scientific hydraulic power packs, uncontaminated seawater system, and portable equipment stored ashore including, Seismic Air compressors, mooring winch and reeler winch.To liaise with the Polar Chief Engineer, Chief Officer, Deck Staff, Principal Scientific Officer and Science Staff for mobilisation of portable scientific equipment including, Seismic Air Compressors, Streamers, ROV’s, Coring Equipment, Nets, Grabs, Drills, etc.To work closely with the CPO Science (Science Bosun) and Deck Crew involved, to ensure the safe operation of Ship’s Winches, Gantries and Cranes.For the role of Deck Engineer we are looking for someone who has:A Seafarer Medical Certificate (ENG1) without restrictionsHas a strong awareness of health, safety, security and environmental issuesPossesses mentoring and training skills; which should lead to developing team dynamics and competenciesIf we’ve just described you, we’d love to hear from you.
