We are seeking a skilled PostgreSQL Database Administrator (DBA) to join our client on a contract basis. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing, monitoring, and maintaining our PostgreSQL databases to ensure optimal performance, reliability, and security within the NHS.
Please note, if you are not available 5 days per week, the client is open to 2 or 3 days per week working also...
Responsibilities:
1. Install, configure, and upgrade PostgreSQL database software.
2. Design and implement backup and recovery strategies to minimize data loss and downtime.
3. Monitor database performance and tune PostgreSQL parameters for optimal efficiency.
4. Troubleshoot and resolve database issues, including performance bottlenecks and data corruption.
5. Implement and maintain database security policies and procedures, including user access control and data encryption.
6. Collaborate with developers to design and optimize database schemas and queries.
7. Perform database migrations and upgrades as required.
8. Document database configurations, procedures, and best practices.
9. Stay current with PostgreSQL releases, patches, and security vulnerabilities.
Requirements:
1. Proven experience as a PostgreSQL Database Administrator or similar role.
2. In-depth knowledge of PostgreSQL architecture, features, and best practices.
3. Hands-on experience with database administration tasks such as installation, configuration, backup and recovery, performance tuning, and security.
4. Proficiency in SQL and scripting languages (e.g., Bash, Python) for automation and troubleshooting.
5. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
6. Excellent communication and collaboration abilities.
7. Exposure working within the NHS
Preferred Qualifications:
1. Experience with PostgreSQL replication, clustering, and high availability solutions (e.g., streaming replication, Patroni, repmgr).
2. Familiarity with PostgreSQL extensions and tools (e.g., pgAdmin, pgBouncer, pg_stat_statements).
3. Knowledge of other database technologies such as MySQL, Oracle, or MongoDB.
4. Certification in PostgreSQL administration or related field.
