Data Scientist
Initial 6 month contract
£21-22 per hour. Inside IR35.
Hybrid role - For this role you will be attached to one of our core locations in Newport, Titchfield or Darlington where presence at one of these sites will form part of the working arrangements agreed with you.
As a Data Scientist you will work at the heart of government, playing an integral role delivering insight from data using statistical and data science techniques. You will support the creation of innovative data products and services and tell compelling stories with data
The role will require you to apply your knowledge of statistics and programming skills to create innovative data products and solve problems in data management and analysis. You will be using a range of software packages and analytical techniques. The work will involve developing expertise in acquiring, processing and using data to inform decisions
KEY ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES:
Use statistical and data science techniques to deliver insight on data, applying your skills in coding,mathematics and statistics to inform debate and influence decisions.
Access data sources from government systems as well as new material from surveys, social media, anddata scraped from the web.
Be innovative and curious when supporting the creation of data products and services, that tell a compelling evidence-based narrative on the UK.
Work proactively with customers to identify their requirements, share knowledge and information
Use a range of data analysis tools and techniques, particularly open source - some of these techniques must be learnt quickly, as needed.
Span of Control
Advise on and apply technical and analytical standards from across government and industry to create reproducible work
Build and support data science capability in other teams - this involves understanding the variety of functional roles that relate to data science and how they can be applied to solve business problems
Technical Skills
Have experience using open-source tools, such as Python, R and Git.
Awareness of the limitations and ethics around using data from varying sources, including open data.
Ability to design, write, and iterate code to work with data. You understand documentation, testing and version control.
Understanding of how to design analysis to support a decision. This could include statistical techniques for modelling, hypothesis testing or time series analysis.
Qualifications:
A first or second class honours degree in a numerate discipline, computer science or IT
Equivalent which demonstrates core statistical skills or
A higher degree, e.g. an MSc or PhD, in Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Physics (this is not a definitive list) or
Have worked in a statistical or data science field for a minimum of two years and are able to demonstrate Continuous Professional Development (via a logbook) in applying statistics or data science at the same level as a foundation degree or Higher National Diploma (level five), which demonstrates the expected skills as outlined in the GSG Competency framework.
Skills and Experience
Good communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate complex analysis to non-specialists and contribute effectively to stakeholders.
Ability to deliver outputs to tight deadlines and overcome challenges to ensure quality business outcomes.
Able to prioritise and manage your own work and others in line with organisational objectives.
The ability to explain and communicate your findings to a varied audience will also be essential.
