GlobalCapital is looking for a data reporter to work in its London office to develop and maintain its frequent issuer bond market data offering, and to provide news coverage of the medium term note and non-core currency bond markets
They will be to the operation of a data product that GlobalCapital is developing to serve the frequent issuer bond markets, so an aptitude and enthusiasm for working with data is essential.
They will also produce the full range of editorial content from scoops, through opinion, analysis and data to the chance to appear on podcasts, concerning their beat.
Not only will they become the authority within the newsroom on their beat but they will also become an ambassador for the organisation within their part of the capital markets.
GlobalCapital has been an authoritative source of capital markets information for professionals for over 35 years and has an equally long history of developing and training junior staff.
The successful candidate will be supported locally and globally by an experienced team of editors and colleagues.
The job will be an excellent first step into capital markets editorial for someone with an aptitude and enthusiasm for working with data.
Principal Accountabilities
1. Be the main point of editorial contact for the selected data sets that GlobalCapital is developing, working with editorial colleagues and the data team to ensure a timely and accurate feed of data and help in development of the product.
2. Produce editorial coverage of primary market data trends based on said data.
3. Assist with the construction and maintenance of proprietary dealer and issuer league tables.
4. Write GlobalCapital's coverage of the non-core currency and medium term note bond markets identifying the most important deals, themes, people moves and other industry news and providing the most trusted, freshest and fullest analysis possible to provide readers with a unique take on the markets.
5. In time, write the full range of the newspaper's coverage - from hard news, to analysis, to opinion, to features - in the house style and to tight deadlines, to maintain GlobalCapital's distinctive editorial voice and its reputation as a reliable and indispensable part of working in capital markets.
6. Build a broad number of deep relationships with key people in the bond markets and become part of the daily fabric of their part of the MTN and non-core currency bond markets to ensure the newspaper is at the forefront of its subject, delivering unique, valuable stories that its readers find essential to do their jobs. This may involve international travel.
7. Be the voice of the MTN and non-core currency bond markets within the newsroom, pitching story ideas, contributing to special reports and providing insight and a point of collaboration for the rest of the editorial team to make sure GlobalCapital provides novel coverage and is at the cutting edge of the newest trends and ideas.
8. Provide cover for other market sectors, especially the financial institution and sovereign, supranational and agency bond markets as well as for emerging market bonds, where appropriate to both develop skills and allow the most consistent coverage.
9. Represent the newspaper at industry events both to provide coverage and to enhance its reputation as part of the fabric of the markets it covers.
10. Contribute towards other relevant data and awards products, where relevant, that GlobalCapital produces for the bond markets.
Reporting Lines
The reporter will report to senior editorial staff within the GC newsroom.
Key Interfaces
Works with a section editor and other senior editors to produce market coverage and develop data products. Although senior editors guide the overall direction of coverage, especially in the early part of the reporter's career, and will have final say over what is covered, the reporter is expected to drive their own ideas and their own workload.
Able to build strong working relationships with colleagues outside of editorial, particularly within the divisional data team - understanding, anticipating, or responding to their requirements in order to make sure GC's data offering becomes an essential part of subscribers' information needs. They will also work closely with the frequent issuers managing editor on this.
Has strong relationships with key people in and around their market sector to provide the sharpest and most insightful coverage. That means having the ability to call people in the market directly rather than having to rely upon press teams and other such gatekeepers.
Works with the senior editors and the marketing and production teams to make sure coverage reaches the biggest possible audience, presented in the best way achievable.
Skill requirements
1. Facility with handling data in Excel and dedicated databases, providing consistent, accurate and timely data.
2. Basic understanding of bond markets - what they are for, and some of the key features of the product.
3. Ability to work under own initiative.
4. The job has many facets, all of which are subject to strict deadlines and a high degree of accuracy. Therefore, the candidate must be able to demonstrate that they can juggle different responsibilities within a busy newsroom.
5. The job will require a great degree of collaboration so the ability to work well in a diverse team is essential.
6. Eagerness to take responsibility for one's own workflow is strongly desirable. The successful candidate needs to become part of a well-functioning but busy team, so the job will suit a candidate who can demonstrate that they can be given a task and make it their own.
