Birmingham Women's and Children's NHS Foundation Trust is seeking to recruit a Consultant Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist, on a permanent contract, who will be responsible for treating children and adolescents up to the age of 18 at the Parkview clinic. This service is part of a larger in-patient service, which also includes a General Adolescent unit, Specialist Eating Disorder Unit and as assessment unit.The post holder will provide senior specialist psychiatric input and medical leadership within an established multidisciplinary in-patient team and have a central role in delivering psychiatric assessment and treatment for in-patients and their families, as well as contributing to providing psychiatric & medical risk management. The consultant psychiatrist will support the in-patient team, medical lead and other professional leads with quality improvement and clinical governance activities. The post holder will also have a close working relationship with other consultant psychiatrists and medical colleagues based at the Parkview clinic. They will offer specialist consultation and peer supervision to medical and non-medical colleagues within the clinical team including the supervision of junior doctors. On a more strategic level, they will relate to the leadership and management structures of the Tier 4 and Mental Health Services.Main duties of the jobThis is a full-time, 10 PA, Consultant Post in inpatient Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. Clinical Base: The base for the Service and this Consultant Post is Parkview Clinic, Queensbridge Road, Moseley, Birmingham. There is adequate accommodation for the permanent professional staff on the team, for the secretarial staff and for any future trainees. The Consultant will have their own office within Parkview Clinic. Secretarial support will be made available. The consultant will have his/her own computer which will be connected to the Trust intranet. Clinical The clinical duties of the post holder will be to support the Tier 4 redesign and changing demands across the Tier 4 services. The successful candidate together with the other Tier 4 Consultants will provide a tertiary referral service for the assessment and treatment of adolescents suffering from psychiatric disorders that may as part of their management need treatment on an inpatient unit. The post holder will provide medical leadership and inpatient treatment for adolescents on inpatient unit working closely alongside the Medical Lead. The post holder will also work closely with West Midlands CAMHS Provider Collaborative. 2. Development of Clinical Services The successful candidate will be able to take a role together with the other Consultants in the planning and development of the Tier 4 Inpatient Service provided by the Childrens Hospital. The post holder will be expected to contribute to the development of safe policies and procedures alongside a staff group that is relatively new and to help to facilitate the development of a wide range of skills, knowledge and expertise to ensure the delivery of care on a multidisciplinary basis is of the highest standard. 3. Clinical Management The Mental Health Service has its own senior leadership team [SLT], which is responsible for the implementation of all aspects of Trust policy and Clinical Governance/Quality initiatives within mental health service. The leadership team at the Parkview clinic meets with the MHS SLT Team regularly to discuss strategic and trust wide operational matters. The post holder will be expected to take part in delivery and development of clinical services within the Trusts Service and Financial Framework and in line with the Trusts clinical strategy. The successful candidate will take part in the annual job planning process. 4 Teaching, Training and Supervision Contributions to postgraduate teaching will be encouraged through attendance at the weekly Post Graduate Medical Education meetings. It is anticipated that the post holder will provide clinical supervision to junior medical staff and staff grade doctors within the service. The Consultant would be expected to be available for consultation and advice to other members of the multi-disciplinary team. There are opportunities within the post for teaching on the West Midlands MRCPsych Course and for contributing to undergraduate teaching. 5 Research, Audit and Academic Meetings The post holder will be expected to facilitate research undertaken within his/her service and elsewhere within the Trust and be aware of current Research and Development initiatives in relation to clinical service developments. The successful candidate would be expected to take part in audit and maintain up to date continuing professional development. There are weekly Post Graduate Medical Education CPD meetings where cases, audits and journal criticisms are presented. The post holder will be encouraged to attend these meetings. There are also grand round presentations at BCH every Wednesday. 6 Clinical Governance The appointee will be expected to participate in all aspects of the Clinical Governance structure developed by the Trust to monitor, maintain and develop the quality and effectiveness of care. The Trust is committed to the development of medical staff through individual appraisal. This will include audit of personal clinical practice, as well as involvement in departmental/specialty reviews attention to continuing professional development and to meeting the requirements for Continuing Medical Education defined by the relevant Royal College (and for which appropriate study leave support will be available) awareness of professional standards and the responsibility to undertake safe and ethical clinical practice and the prompt response to any circumstances which may result in increased clinical risk or adverse outcome. The requirement to undertake annual appraisal is a contractual requirement. Funding is available for approved study leave as defined in the Trusts Study Leave Policy. Study leave is available up to 30 days in 3 years with associated travel expenses. The relevant policies will be made available on request. 7 Day-time Emergencies The post holder will be expected to give advice together with senior colleagues and to make arrangements to offer timely psychiatric assessments when appropriate in individual cases.Person SpecificationEssentialEssential
MBBS or equivalent medical qualification CCT holder in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry or equivalent (or within 6 months of becoming eligible for CCT) Current full registration with the GMC (or eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment) Wide range of experience in child and adolescent psychiatry including tier 4 experience GMC Licence to practise MRC Psych (or equivalent) Approval (or eligible for approval) under Section 12(2) of the Mental Health Act Eligible to work in the UK Provision of high-quality mental services, as trainee or consultant A broad range of experience in Child & Adolescent psychiatry and working with multi-disciplinary teams Experience of assessment, treatment and medical monitoring of patients and their families Evidence of capability of building strong relationships within a complex referral system Evidence of being a strong team member with excellent communication skills and interpersonal skills Evidence of commitment to personal, professional development Evidence of the ability to cope with unexpected /urgent clinical situations Evidence of ability to respond to and professional development Evidence of the ability to cope with unexpected /urgent clinical situations Evidence of ability to respond to and cope effectively with change Evidence of ability to effectively prioritise clinically/managerially/administratively Able to manage duties under the MHA, including assessment of patients in Place of Safety detained under Section 136 Experience with the treatment of patients with complex mental disorders, neurodevelopmental conditions, emotional trauma and emerging personality disorders Management of patients under CPA Knowledge & experience of clinical audit Ability to work within a collaborative multidisciplinary framework, and to share leadership responsibilities with senior colleagues of other professions Ability to work across teams and disciplinary boundaries in a collaborative style Excellent communication skills, diplomacy and tact.
