Consultant Ophthalmologists with an interest in Corneal and Ocular

We are seeking to recruit an enthusiastic, innovative and progressive Consultant to join our well established and recognised corneal team. The appointee will partake in clinics and theatre sessions across both sites, City Hospital, Birmingham and Sandwell General Hospital. Applications are welcomed from candidates with FRCOphth (or equivalent) who are on the General Medical Council's Specialist Register in Ophthalmology. A corneal fellowship/ post CCT specialist training would be preferred. Applicants should be able to independently manage corneal disease and be able to partake in general oncalls, and be fully proficient in surgery related to corneal disease and cataract surgery. As a regional centre, this post will involve training all grades from medical students to fellows and allied health professionals.

Main duties of the job
The appointee will take equal responsibility with existing Consultants for the proper functioning of the clinical service, working with clinical and managerial colleagues towards achieving and maintaining national maximum waiting times and developing clinical pathways to address the referral to treatment times.
There will be a general ophthalmology oncall commitment and an eye casualty session as part of the job role. The appointee will be involved in training junior doctors and fellows, and be expected to take part in quality improvement and audit sessions as well as working towards improving the provision of care to the served population. The keratoconus service is the main one in the region, offering corneal cross linking with nurse-led clinics. The appointee will be expected to help manage and help this service as it evolves. The job will involve a combination of outpatient clinics, day case and inpatient theatres involving a wide range of corneal surgery including all forms of corneal transplantation.
The appointee is expected to be proficient in transplantation surgery. Grand rounds and joint clinics are regular and the appointee is expected to take part and help run these sessions.

The corneal team at SWBH is primarily sited at Birmingham Midland Eye Centre, with services also being run at Sandwell General Hospital. The corneal service is large and covers the region with a combination of acute and general patients.
