Job summaryWe are advertising for a Substantive Consultant Ophthalmologist with an interest Paediatric Ophthalmology, Strabismus and Neuro Ophthalmology.The Sussex Eye Hospital is a specialist eye hospital with two dedicated ophthalmic theatres (one with anaesthetic cover); one ward; outpatients department and orthoptic departments and a 24hr eye casualty service. The Orthoptic department is run by the Head Orthoptist and 6 orthoptic colleagues and opticians the new role will work closely with this team to provide the Paedatric, strabismus and Neuro ophthalmology service. The Royal Alexandra Children's Hospital has 3 dedicated paedatric theatres, a day case unit and 3 wards and the Trevor Mann Baby Unit provides level 3 neonatal care.The service serves a population of approximately 750,000, through the hub at the Sussex Eye Hospital and the spoke unit at Princess Royal Hospital and Lewes Queen Victoria Hospital.The Sussex Eye Hospital has an active role in research, supported by its own research team and the trust research department.Main duties of the jobThe role involves working in a friendly department which providing a comprehensive paediatric, strabismus and neuro ophthalmology service as described in the timetable. Working alongside a skilled Orthoptic team, Mrs Victoria Barrett Ophthalmology Consultant with a special interest in Paediatric ophthalmology, strabismus and Neuro ophthalmology and Mr Dominic Heath who is reducing his hours as he moves towards full retirement and Dr Sarah Cooper Neurologist with a special interest in Neuro ophthalmology. The Oculoplastic team supports the service with oculoplastic and orbital expertise. The Uveitis Consultant Ed Hughes supports complex paediatric patients with uveitis. Both sites have Visual Field analysers and OCT scanning facilities. The main orthoptic department is at SEH but there is also a service at PRH. We provide Medical Retina services at Hove Polyclinic. Most surgery is performed in 2 ophthalmic theatres at SEH, one with anaesthetic cover; and cataract surgery is also performed at Lewes Victoria Hospital. Paediatric Surgery is provide at the Royal Alexander Hospital which is the childrens Hospital on the main hospital site at the Royal Sussex County Hospital and has a team of anaesthetic anaesthetists and other specialist paediatric staff. Special care baby units at Brighton (Trevor Mann Baby Unit) Level 3 and at Princess Royal Hospital Level 2. We work closely with Neurology and Neurosurgery and Dr Sarah Cooper is a Neurologist with a special interest in Neuro ophthalmology and works within our department. We provide a service to the regional Pituitary service a multidisciplinary team of Neurosurgery, Endocrinology and NeuroradiologyPerson Specification
