This temporary top up will be in place until the annual pay uplift for 2024/25 is confirmedJob overviewWe are looking for a dedicated and passionate Consultant in Palliative Medicine to join our well-established and highly motivated Palliative Care team in ABUHB with a track record for service development and pioneering education, training and research.The ABUHB Specialist Palliative Care Team is a peripatetic consultant led service which aligns with the Primary Care and Community Division. The service delivers consult support and advice to patients and families within the hospital setting, medical staffing for the Specialist Palliative Care inpatient unit in St Davids Hospice Care; and consultant led support for Palliative Care community teams across Gwent and South Powys in collaboration with third sector.This is an exciting post that will offer opportunities and experience all aspects of Palliative Care. The post holder would beresponsible for the effective and appropriate medical care of patients across the directorate, primarily supporting the MDT teams at St Davids Inpatient unit and a St Davids Hospice Care Community team. The post holder will be based in St David’s Hospice, a 15 bedded inpatient unit located in Blackett Avenue, Malpas, Newport. The post holder will have clinical governance of 13 Specialist Palliative Care inpatient beds alongside another Palliative medicine consultant.Main duties of the jobThe role would also include community work supporting local Specialist Palliative Care teams and on-call telephone advice commitments for ABUHB and adjacent health board Cwm Taf Morgannwg. The post holder may occasionally be expected to provide cover at other hospitals depending on the individual’s specialist interests, preferences, or the demand of the service.You will lead consultant ward rounds and multidisciplinary team meetings and supervise any junior medical staff or students who may rotate through the Directorate.We are a 9-5 Service Monday to Friday; The Post Holder would be allocated their own office space at St Davids Hospice inpatient unit, this goes hand in hand with full IT facilities and secretarial support. The inpatient unit has a fully established team of St Davids Specialist Nurses who work alongside the ABUHB medical team (consultant, specialty doctors and junior doctors including trainees in Palliative medicine).The number of SPA’s may vary with the agreement of the post holder and the Health Board in advance or after commencement and an increase in SPA’s would accompany an agreement to take on additional duties such as educational supervision of a junior doctor.
