Required to fill this full time replacement post within the Ophthalmology Department based mainly at St Jamess University Hospital. Paediatric surgery takes place at The General Infirmary in Leeds and there is a day case facility at Wharfedale Hospital. The successful candidate will be joining 3 consultants in this specialty with a strong background for training. There is an expectation to take part in the on-call rota. We have strong links with the endocrinology dept, running the joint thyroid eye disease service as well as with the head and neck MDT, managing complex cancer and orbital conditions.

Main duties of the job
The successful applicant must possess FRCOphth (or equivalent) and should be included on the Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT at the time of interview, if currently within a training programme within the UK. In accordance with the consultant appointment regulations, all other categories of doctors must be on the Specialist Register.
Applicants should have established skills in Oculoplastics, lacrimal and orbital surgery and its related specialties including for the paediatric population. A strong commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and a research interest is desirable.
Consideration will be given to applicants who wish to work full or part time and those wishing to job share.

Job responsibilities
In relation to this post, the Ophthalmology department at Leeds Teaching Hospitals strives to offer the very best care to all our patients through the delivery of high quality clinically services underpinned by excellent research, innovation and teaching. This role combines each element in the sub-specialties of genetic eye disease and medical retina, placing the post-holder at the heart of both a busy service for the local population and a highly specialised commissioned service with a thriving research portfolio for the region.
The primary objectives of this post is to help deliver, support and develop the local and regional service which serves both the adult and paediatric population. This will be for oculoplastics, lacrimal and orbital conditions.
In addition the post holder will contribute to the overall function of the ophthalmology department by supporting all colleagues and points of service delivery as required. As part of this, the consultant will provide clinical leadership and drive service improvement, efficiency and innovation in their area of specialism.
The post holder will be expected to engage fully in all aspects of clinical audit, clinical governance and patient experience pertaining to their area of specialism.
Person Specification
Training, Research, Teaching & Audit
Essential
Should have completed a recognised training programme in Ophthalmology.
Evidence of the ability to carry out medical research.
Experience in training undergraduate medical students and postgraduate doctors.
Experience of participation in regular clinical audit.
Desirable
Previous experience of supervising research by junior staff.
Previous attendance on Appraisal Techniques and Small Group Teaching Workshops.
Qualifications
Essential
MBBS or MB.ChB (or equivalent).
FRCOphth or equivalent qualification.

Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment and hold a current licence to practice. YOUR GMC NUMBER MUST BE STATED ON YOUR APPLICATION FORM.
Eligibility to work in the UK.
Is up to date and fit to practise safely.

Experience
Essential
Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in the management of general and acute ophthalmic conditions.
Specifically, he/she must demonstrate higher training in Oculoplastics/Orbit and Lacrimal surgery.
Evidence of continuous career progression consistent with personal circumstances.
