Main duties of the job
As an Acute Physician, you will be responsible for providing Consultant cover for medical patients on our Acute Medical Unit (AMU), Emergency Department (ED) in-reach, and Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) unit, while also participating in the General Internal Medicine (GIM) on-call rota.
Clinical and administrative responsibility for patients in AMU & SDEC
Consultant level input to deliver early and appropriate clinical decision making for emergency admissions
Care for patients requiring Non-Invasive Ventilation (NIV) and high dependency care
Supervision of medical admissions through the emergency assessment unit, including flow-through from the Emergency Department
Rapid assessment of suspected infectious disease patients and appropriate transfer to designated wards
Assessing and assigning patients for ongoing inpatient care, short stay inpatient care in the unit, ambulatory care, or discharge
Supervision and training of junior medical staff and allied health professionals working in the units
Supervision and assessment of junior staff performing ward-based invasive procedures for patients in the units
Ensuring that resuscitation and end-of-life care issues are addressed
Review and revision of joint protocols for the management of emergency admissions with clinical colleagues and the nursing team
Development of Ambulatory Emergency Medicine Pathways
Delivery of ambulatory medicine clinics
Delivery of clinical audits relevant to the needs of the Units

The successful candidate will have a job planning session after 3-6 months of being in post to review their timetable and SPA commitments. It is expected that there will be some flexibility around the timing of any duties and activities, reflecting role development.

Full registration and a license to practice with the GMC
Entry on the GMC Specialist Register for via: Acute Medicine, or General Internal Medicine (GIM) or a related medical specialty oCCT (CCT date must be within 6 months of the interview date) oPortfolio Pathway (previously CESR)
MBBS or equivalent
Out of programme management experience
Experience
Essential
Extensive experience of acute general medicine
Wide experience of General Internal Medicine including multidisciplinary
Significant evidence of experience in clinical leadership
Undergraduate and postgraduate teaching experience
Understand the principals of Clinical Governance
Evidence of experience of / commitment to audit and improving clinical practice/service development
Experience and interest in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
CPD - Evidence of post qualifying and continuing professional development clinical knowledge and skills
Must have an understanding of the background to and aims of current healthcare policy/national guidance/CQC/ and appreciate the implications of this on engagement
Research/QI
Essential
Active interest in research and commitment to clinical innovation
Familiar with quality improvement methodologies and/or research
