Job overviewUniversity Hospitals Sussex are delighted to offer the position of a full (or part) time Consultant Haematologist to work alongside our team of 5 Haematologists in the Western half of the trust. This position is based primarily in St Richards Hospital, Chichester in a beautiful part of West Sussex. We are looking for an enthusiastic, motivated and forward looking colleague to work within our closeknit team.The Haematology department provides an extensive haemato-oncology practice to level 2b care, as well as general haematology incl obstetrics and paediatrics, transfusion medicine and is a UKHCDO accredited Haemophilia CentreThis is an exciting opportunity to become involved in developing a clinically led, integrated Haematology Service within the wider trust along the South Coast and offers the applicant the opportunity and encouragement to develop a chosen specialist interest . We offer flexible working, the potential for cross site working and have a 1 in 6 out of hours on-call rota (which may change to a 1 in 12 in the coming months)Main duties of the jobTo fulfil the role of a Consultant Haematologist in providing full clinical care to those with blood disorders and inpatient care to those with haematological malignancy up to and including BSCH level 2B care.To support colleagues with specialist advice on all aspects of Haematology both within the trust and in primary care.To provide clinical support to the Haematology LaboratoryTo actively engage in departmental meetings, clinical governance and teaching to our Spr’s and clinical fellowTo become actively involved in our Haematology trials portfolioWorking for our organisationAt UHSussex we’re proud to be at the heart of the NHS. They will provide inpatient care for haematology patients up to and including BCSH level 2B. They will be expected to attend clinics for both new and follow up patients, participate in MDT and departmental meetings and participate regularly in audit and guideline production. In addition we would expect the appointee to complete all patient-related administrative duties in a timely manner as well as bone marrow and blood film reporting, participate in safe intrathecal chemotherapy administration and support our Spr’s in bone marrow aspiration and biopsy . They would also be expected to provide consultative advice to other healthcare professionals within the hospital and primary care settings.We have a very active trials department covering both malignant and non malignant disciplines and are regularly within the top ten recruiters to national trials. We currently have the following open to recruitment or in follow up within the trust: AML18, REMoDL-A, Flair, RADAR, Fitness, Mithridate and Victor.The appointee will be expected to participate in clinical trials and maintain good clinical practice. The Trust has an active Research Support team, and other research and development is encouraged.The appointee will be expected to maintain their clinical personal development and attend annual appraisal and revalidation.As a Consultant Haematologist, we would expect the appointee to act as a leader within the department and champion the goals of the department and the organisation as a whole.The trust runs monthly mandated clinical governance half day with presentations from individual departments or stand-alone afternoons for departmental issues. Both hospitals currently have individual MDTs and regular teaching sessions within department. There is an active audit programme being led by the audit lead Dr Narat and materially assisted by the hospital audit department. Participation in fortnightly journal club and other educational meetings is encouraged.Person specificationExperience & Qualifications• Full GMC Registration with a licence to practice• CCT in Specialty or equivalent (equivalence must be confirmed by GMC by date of AAC)• Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register or eligibility for entry within 6 months of the date of the AACClinical Skills & Experience• Understanding of clinical risk management• An ability to communicate well with patients and staff• Broad haematological experience and expertise to include haemato-oncology, general haematology, haemostasis and thrombosis, transfusion medicine and laboratory expertise• Proficiency in obtaining bone marrow aspirate and trephine samples• Expertise in reporting bone marrow aspirate and blood film samples• Proficiency in removal of Hickman lines• Proficiency in safe administration of intrathecal chemotherapyKnowledge• Breadth of experience in and outside specialtyOrganisation & Planning• Experience and ability to work in multi-professional teams• Understanding of: NHS / Clinical governance / Resource constraints• Evidence of managerial skills: Achievements / Course attendedTeaching Skills• Evidence of an interest and commitment to teaching• Recognised teaching qualificationAcademic & Research• Evidence of participation in auditResearch experiencePublicationsPrizes and honoursCareer Progression & Personal Attributes• Appropriate progression of career to date• Evidence of:- Good communication skills both oral and writtenGeneral information for applicantsAs part of our commitment to a safe working environment, we undertake a Disclosure and Barring Service check on all new employees where the role is eligible for a criminal record check .
