Consultant General Surgeon with Interest in Benign UGI

The post holder will be responsible for the diagnosis, treatment and continuing care of patients with general surgical conditions and in conjunction with consultant colleagues will take part in general surgical duties
The post holder will, in co-operation with colleagues, share the general surgical workload and be actively involved in the planning, scheduling and delivery of emergency and elective surgical care. The elective work will include endoscopy, day-case and elective inpatient theatre work, as well as outpatient sessions.
The post holder will provide a surgical outpatient and inpatient service for the local resident population as well as outreach clinics for SHSCT patients residing elsewhere in the area. The post holder will be expected to have elective commitments on several sites within the SHSCT (i.e. Armagh Community Hospital, Banbridge Polyclinic, Daisy Hill Hospital & South Tyrone Hospital).
The Emergency Service is separate from the Elective Service and involves each Surgeon devoting him/herself entirely to the daily management of surgical emergencies for a period of 1 full week in 12. The combined first and second on-call night rota is 1 in 6 on-call. Emergency Activity on-call and at weekends is recognized through a regular PA allocation on the job plan to cover the emergency commitment. The Surgeon of the Week will be supported by a senior and two junior trainees and Foundation year 1 doctor.
The post holder will be expected to work in teams to provide cover for inpatients for off-site Consultant colleagues.
The post holder will be involved in a number of clinical initiatives such as the enhancement of the Ambulatory Service and improving day-case pathways.
The post holder will be expected to contribute to the establishment of a benign upper GI MDT and to care for patients with a variety of benign upper GI disease which includes, but is not limited to, the management of patients with complex biliary disease, paraoesophgeal hernias, achalasia and reflux disease. They will be encouraged to contribute to the ongoing entry of data into the National Hiatal Surgery Registry for benchmarking against national peer outcomes.
The post holder will be involved with the supervision, appraisal and teaching of Junior Doctors. The teaching of Junior Doctors is an integral part of the clinical work. It is expected that the post holder will undertake clinical and educational supervision across a range of trainee grades and we will support you in obtaining recognized trainer status from the GMC.
The post holder will undertake undergraduate teaching for Queen’s University of Belfast students.
CAH is a District General Hospital in which General Surgery manages emergency surgical paediatric admissions between the ages of 5 to 16 years (conditions managed are abdominal pain (principally appendicitis) and minor closed head injuries). Support Services on site include 24/7 Paediatric Services with additional Surgical Support at the Regional Centre in Belfast (Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children). The post holder will not be expected to carry out elective Paediatric Surgery.
