Consultant in Emergency Department
RCHT is the main provider of acute and specialist care services in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.
We are a designated trauma unit within the Peninsula Major Trauma Network, with 2 helipads allowing critically ill and injured patients to be conveyed to from across the region.
ED Consultant Role
You will be joining our dynamic team as a valued colleague. We have a varied workforce with current additional expertise in a range of interests including PHEM, PEM, PoCUS, Medical Education, Clinical Governance, and Leadership.
A team job plan provides a shop floor presence from 0800 until 2200 seven days a week, with on-call availability outside of these times on a 1:15 basis. The clinical work is varied with excellent exposure to a wide range of presentations across the full spectrum of illness and injury.
This role offers a contract of 7PAs and will attract dedicated time for CPD alongside a study leave allowance.
Trauma / Transfer Consultant Role
There is an opportunity for an additional 1.25 PAs for those with a trauma / transfer interest. You will assist the hospital trauma team as a second consultant, providing advanced procedural and transfer skills as needed. We recently launched a pre-hospital response car in conjunction with SWASFT to deliver critical care interventions in the community.
Main duties of the job
Key Responsibilities
Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the assessment and management of patients within the Emergency Department
Share responsibility for the day-to-day management of the Emergency Department shopfloor
Provide supervision, teaching and training for junior medical staff, advanced practitioners, and medical students
Active participation in continued professional development as required for revalidation purposes
Participate in departmental and trust clinical governance processes, quality improvement initiatives and audit
Attend departmental meetings as appropriate
Attend teaching and deliver sessions including simulation
Participate in, or lead, the Trauma Team as appropriate (Consultant led 24 hours a day)
Fulfil duties of weekly roster including provision of out-of-hours clinical shifts

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
MBBS or equivalent oMCEM or equivalent oFCEM or equivalent
GMC Specialist Register for or within six months of obtaining CCT/European Community Rights at time of interview.
Desirable
Higher degree eg MSc, PhD, MD oCCT / CESR holder in Emergency Medicine, or within six months of eligibility
Experiance
Essential
Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCT in Emergency Medicine
Can offer expert clinical opinion on the full spectrum of problems in Emergency Medicine
Able to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients
ALS, ATLS and APLS provider
Desirable
Additional experience in an area of subspecialist interest or a related specialty
Instructor in one or more life support courses
Management
Essential
Can lead the Emergency Department on clinical shifts
Experience of audit and quality improvement
Understanding of the principles of clinical governance
Ability and willingness to work within the Trust and NHS performance framework and targets
