Communications Officer/Public Affairs Officer - Local Authority

We have an excellent opportunity for a Communications Officer to join a Local Authority within their Public Affairs department on a 6+ month contract.

Location: BR1 3UH, Hybrid
Start date: ASAP
Contract duration: 6+ months
Working hours: Mon - Fri, 08:30 - 17:00, 36 hours p/w
Pay rate: �14 p/h

As the Communications Officer, your duties will include:

  • Write for press releases, social media and magazine articles.
  • To plan a communications strategy and action plan around any of the council's services with a particular emphasis initially on Housing, Planning, Regeneration and Strategic Property.
  • To research, write and produce materials targeted at a variety of different audiences both internal and external.
  • Deliver the communications plan, to include, writing press releases, web material, leaflets, newsletters, magazine articles and social media.
  • Experience of working in a team - this role will report to the Public Affairs Executive and the Head of Service.
  • Experience of working at all levels - this role can include working with Heads of Service, directors and Portfolio holders and ward councillors.

Skills and experience:

  • The successful candidate will be a professional communications self-starter who can undertake the following role and has the competencies and skills to fulfil a wide range of communications needs.
  • Accurate writing and grammar/spelling skills for different audiences is absolutely essential.
  • Ability to take reportage photographs as needed, especially in relation to news releases, magazine articles and Instagram.
  • Eye for details in researching stories and in delivering outputs.
  • Ability to balance multiple projects and prioritise work to achieve often tight deadlines.
  • Understanding of social media platforms and how to write for them.
  • Knowledge of working in a political environment is useful.
  • Experience of answering media enquiries is useful.
