Job Type: Full Time fixed-term
Job title: Collections Officer
Contract type: Full time (35 hours per week), 3 month fixed term contract. Possibility for extension or permanent appointment.
Location: London
Salary: Grade 4. Up to £30,142 pro rata. Please note, for internal applicants the salary will be reflected by pay and award policy
Working arrangements: 35 hours per week between 8am and 6pm. Hybrid working - you will be required to work in the office a minimum of 6 days per month.
An exciting opportunity to help care for and conserve an internationally significant collection of artworks and objects, and to share them with the public to educate and inspire.
The Royal College of Physicians holds one of the UK’s most complete collections of medical artefacts, as well as over 5,000 paintings, drawings, miniatures, and sculptures. In London, our permanent displays and temporary exhibitions attract over 32,000 visitors a year, with a further 400,000 visits to items on loan to museums and galleries around the world.
As a fixed-term Collections Officer, you’ll use your professionalism, creativity, and commitment to provide collections management services and specialist support to the museum.
You’ll ensure the on-going care of the collections and maintain up-to-date and accurate records to support their use in a wide range of activities for the benefit of our members and the public.
You’ll report to and work closely with the Senior Curator and hold a key role in a busy and experienced team of 9 heritage professionals.
Responsibilities
Collections management of the RCP museum collections, including documentation, storage, display, and loans
Preventive conservation, including emergency planning and environmental monitoring, and liaising with external conservators
Delivering tours and responding to enquiries
Working with the rest of the museum team to deliver our active programme of loans, events and exhibitions
Experience
Experience of working in a busy collections role, including object handling, movement and location, storage, display and transport to accepted professional standards
Knowledge of cataloguing and documentation in line with Spectrum standards
Experience of preventive conservation
Experience advocating for collections care
Excellent team-working skills, able to work independently and proactively
Ability to effectively prioritise work and to work to deadlines
Ability to deliver high quality Customer Service
Ability to work on own initiative as well as part of a team
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Accurate with good attention to detail
