Clinical Lead Psychologist

We are looking for a dynamic, resilient, charismatic clinical lead for our Fens Service. The service offers an exceptional model, providing trauma focussed treatment for patients in a maximum secure forensic setting. The Fens is one of two services in the country offering such a service. We operate in a separate wing within HMP Whitemoor offering 70 beds: 23 transition beds and 47 treatment beds. The prisoners we work with often experience highly complex and chronic mental health challenges, with longstanding histories of trauma, neglect and rejection and are frequently hard to engage with. We have a rare opportunity to work with our patients over a 3 + year period allowing us to develop close clinical relationships with the service users. This role offers a fantastic development opportunity for someone looking to retain clinical skills and enhance their management and leadership skills. We are looking for someone to strategically lead the clinical team and work in close partnership with the HMPPS staff. Main duties of the jobThe core purpose of this role is to establish and ensure the delivery of the clinical Offender Personality Disorder Pathway within the service. You will be working clinically to deliver individual and group therapy, providing clinical and managerial supervision to the clinical team. A significant aspect of your role will be working with our partner providers to ensure the safe and effective delivery of clinical care. You will be accountable for the delivery of the contract as agreed and managed by both NHSE and HMPPS commissioners. As the Clinical Lead, there will be ample support available to you. You will join a senior (regional, national) supervision group, have regular contact with our Director of Psychological Services and other senior leaders within the OPD Pathway. You will also have access to training and development opportunities as appropriate. The team have an impressive CPD budget and frequently undertake training for the whole team as well as development opportunities for individuals. You will also have the opportunity to get involved in/lead on research programmes and publications utilising the services close links with Derby University and the Trust's close links with Cambridge University.

In addition, it involves working as an autonomous clinician within that service delivering individual and group therapies whilst providing clinical and managerial supervision to the clinical team. The post also involves delivery of a leadership role for partnership working with the operational governor and operational staff dedicated to the Fens services, liaising with other key partners within the prison such as Northamptonshire Healthcare Foundation Trust and having accountability for delivery of the contract as agreed and managed by both NHSE and HMPPS commissioners. The role requires the post holder to embrace and lead on the Trusts values. Clinical Responsibilities:
To be responsible for ensuring the overall clinical management and delivery of the systematic provision of a high-quality specialist multi-disciplinary assessment, treatment and aftercare arrangements to service users admitted into or on pathway to the Offender Personality Disorder Pathway (OPDP) Fens Services. To manage the clinical work of all the clinical staff that work in the service and ensure that their work is consistent with the agreed contract specification, professional bodies ethics and competencies and Trust clinical governance standards of care. To balance CPFT and national policies and strategy with local needs, resources, and constraints in deciding which modernisation and other initiatives to promote, when, and how, to achieve coherence as well as improvement in services. To work with HMP Whitemoor operational leads and the governor to ensure the clinically informed work of the operational staff in the service is consistent with the agreed service specification, is of high quality and is supported by professional supervision arrangements to ensure the effective wellbeing of all staff.
To maintain and ensure the implementation of effective policies and procedures for all aspects of work in the service that are both specific to this service and in line with the policies and procedures of the Cambridge and Peterborough Foundation Trust and those of HMPPS as implemented within HMP Whitemoor. To maintain governance systems for the service and to ensure that appropriate systems are in place for clinical audit, recording of information, risk assessment and management, recruitment, retention, communication throughout and across all sections of the service, training, supervision, research and audit, and service user involvement. The post holder will ensure that there is a system in place for service user involvement and feedback into service development at the appropriate level given that this is a high secure environment. The post holder will manage legal challenges to the clinical service via NHS procedures and in consultation with outside bodies.
Strategic Partnership Responsibilities
To ensure the delivery model of all Fens services defined within the NHS/HMPPS clinical contract (##########8) is operationalised and managed in line with agreed stakeholder outcomes, CPFTs safety and quality forums and related meetings whilst contributing to OPDP policies and NHS Framework developments as an innovation service with expertise in the treatment and management of high-risk offenders with a background of trauma and personality difficulties To ensure that there is an up-to-date Fens Operational Policy, LTHSE MOU and appropriate governance documents effectively accounting for both services and that the service adheres to these policies. To work with the wing governor and governing governor to maintain effective communication and partnership working between uniformed staff and the clinical team, attending HMP Whitemoor SMT in support of the prisons wider strategic development and delivery. To work collaboratively with the wing governor, the service manager and the services senior management team, to devise, have agreed and follow a Business Planning process for the service on an annual basis, in consultation with staff and service users. To work with the Fens governor and service manager to ensure all required reporting procedures and outputs are delivered in a timely fashion and in accordance with required data processing flowcharts, and any remedial actions required by the commissioners are adhered to. To ensure Fens teams are represented in both national and local HMPPS /CPFT forums showcasing initiatives and partnerships working and are represented on key policy and delivery structures such as the joint NHS/HMPPS national meeting forum, directorate professional leads meetings, and as required within NHS and HMPPS strategic meetings. To develop and sustain high quality professional practice by all staff working within the speciality. To interpret professional Codes of Conduct, legal obligations, Trust, and prison polices to provide a coherent ethical and effective service to service users, staff and the public. Also, to advise (and when necessary, challenge) multidisciplinary colleagues on such ethical, legal, policy and professional issues.

Substantial assessed experience of working as a qualified clinical/counselling/Forensic psychologist at post-qualification and specialist level with adults experiencing significant mental health difficulties Experience of specialist psychological assessment, formulation and treatment of clients across the Prison System. Experience of working with a wide variety of client groups, across the whole life course presenting problems that reflect the full range of clinical severity including maintaining a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems, verbal abuse and the threat of physical abuse. Experience of professional management of qualified and pre-qualified clinical psychologists.

Experience of delivering supervision to non-psychology MDT staff.

Ability to demonstrate leadership skills in a psychology role Experience of working with HMPPS and a wider range of stakeholders. Skills in the use of complex methods of psychological assessment, psychological formulation, intervention and management requiring sustained and intense concentration. This requires the use of highly developed analytical and judgement skills. Ability to identify and employ mechanisms of clinical governance, including regular supervision, to support and maintain clinical practice in the face of regular exposure to highly emotive material and challenging behaviour.

Doctoral level knowledge of clinical psychology including highly developed knowledge of lifespan developmental psychology, models of psychopathology, psychological aspects of physical health difficulties, and two or more distinct psychological therapies. Evidence of continuing professional development as recommended by BPS.
