An opportunity has arisen for an experienced, dynamic, motivated and reliable Senior Orthoptist to join our team of 4 Orthoptists and 4 Optometrists as Clinical Lead Orthoptist. As an autonomous practitioner you should be capable of providing the highest quality Orthoptic, including extended role, services in the acute and community sectors. The postholder will act as a source of Orthoptic expertise for junior orthoptist , peers, optometrists and medical colleagues given their advanced clinical reasoning and evidence-based practice skills. There will also be specific responsibilities for clinical leadership and operational management of the Orthoptic service working closely alongside the Ophthalmology management team. The successful candidate will oversee other functions of the department such as student placements, the school screening service, people relations and quality improvement.Main duties of the job
To provide clinical Orthoptic services to the highest level acting as mentor for less experienced colleagues and providing patients with the best quality care To lead the departmental team of Orthoptists in terms of staffing, patient administration, service planning, delivery and strategic development To oversee the provision and the effective delivery of Swindon Borough school vision screening service in liaison with Orthoptic school screening lead.

To maintain up to date knowledge of techniques and technology and to maintain required levels professional clinical practice, competencies, and skills. To maintain own standards of professional conduct and performance in line with HCPC and BIOS To be aware of and implement Trust and departmental policies and procedures, and participate in the development of departmental policies To lead and maintain quality assurance standards, clinical governance, and clinical risk for the Orthoptic service and Trust To liaise with the Ophthalmology management team in maintaining the electronic and departmental rota systems ensuring all types of leave are dealt with accurately and efficiently so as to support a safe service To represent the Orthoptic department in Ophthalmology business meetings.
Person SpecificationQualificationsEssential
Degree BSc ( or equivalent Diploma) in Orthoptics Current Professional registration with HCPC Membership of BIOS Evidence of appropriate on-going professional development/CPD and postgraduate training
Desirable
Teaching certificate C& G 730 and/ or BIOS teaching clinical course
ExperienceEssential
Significant range of post graduate clinical experience working within a team and single handed Clinical experience in paediatric Orthoptics Teaching clinical Orthoptics Management of staff
KnowledgeEssential
Highly developed ability to communicate with all ages, ethnicity and abilities in explaining diagnosis and treatment to gain optimum cooperation and results To be able to communicate sensitive and complex information , sometimes in distressing /emotional circumstances Proven knowledge of the investigation, diagnosis and management of a broad range of specialist and complex Orthoptic patients Demonstrate the ability to handle difficult situations calmly and effectively and to deal with patients tactfully, efficiently and with empathy Good presentation skills for formal and informal teaching

Knowledge of research methodology , and statistical analysis
