Clerk of Works
The role holder will be required to supervise the activities of personnel carrying out works for UNS (which includes employees, ASW and contract workers) on a day to day basis to ensure that all activities are executed in a safe, cost effective and reliable manner inline with legislative and company procedures. The role objective is to ensure that construction, demolition and decommissioning works are carried out to specification and by safe working methods.
The role holder shall work closely with the wider UNS team to support the characterisation, monitoring and transfer of waste. The role holder will report directly to the UNS Senior Project Engineer and will be appointed as RPS for an area /facility
JOB DESCRIPTION


  • Ensure a consistently high standard of work is produced in accordance with specification and quality standards through regular quality inspections with sub-contractors.
  • In conjunction with the Direct and supervise day to day operations of sub-contractors or UNS operators ensuring compliance with SSOW procedures.
  • Ensure material requisitions are issued in adequate time to achieve the Programme.
  • Schedule, control and monitor all plant and materials on a weekly basis ensuring tickets / inspections are in date.
  • Fulfil the role of Temporary Works Co-Ordinator when required.
  • Liaise with Contracts Manager/Project Manager, Project Engineer, regarding cost control, waste management, variations and confirmation of instructions.
  • Carrying out safety inspections and fulfilling the health, safety and welfare responsibilities as detailed in the Company’s Policy
  • Maintain quality and environmental control procedures in accordance with ISO 9001and ISO 14001.
  • Create and maintain good relations with clients, design teams and neighbours as well as any other stakeholders.
  • Maintain comprehensive and accurate records of own activity related to projects to enable traceability.
  • Control and monitor site waste in accordance with the Company’s Site Waste Minimisation and Management policy.
  • Fulfil company CPD requirements undertaking all relevant training and development activities as required.
  • Continually develop knowledge of innovative construction/decommissioning techniques and products to enhance the business
  • Contribute to the Company’s Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives.
  • Identify technical problems on site, to recommend corrective action and issue directions as authorised under the Contract
  • Witness on site testing & commissioning and keep appropriate records of results
  • Arrange testing resources if required.
  • Prepare schedules of defects and certify rectification of snagging items
  • Work with colleagues and managers to revise, update or develop working procedures,
  • Act as Supervisor as described under the contract )
  • Carry out Radiological Protection Supervisor duties to ensure compliance with the Ionising Radiation Regulations.
  • Ensure compliance with CDM2015
  • Undertaking weekly task observations to provide feedback to workers and raising event reports (as required) for events and incidents that warrant escalation via the formal processes.
  • Undertake weekly inspections to monitor workplace standards
  • Undertakes Self-verification audits on procedures associated with Waste Operations.
  • Daily presence at the workface to monitor compliance and identify deviations from agreed processes.
  • Work alongside the Project Manager/ Project Engineers to support them in their role and to enable the meeting of safety, cost, and programme and quality objectives and ensuring that the Principal Contractor duties on the project(s) are discharged.
  • Team members are motivated, competent and cooperative.
  • Daily work tasks are planned and agreed at regular team briefings with the team.
  • Delegations are identified and utilised during work commitments or annual leave.
  • Consistently punctual in attending meetings, hazard identification reviews, etc,
  • Maintain a daily diary of activities that can be used to manage contractor delivery performance.
  • Carry out building inductions and awareness sessions to new workers in decommissioning areas.
  • Review and acceptance of risk assessments and method statements providing coherent and relevant feedback of quality issues.
  • Control and issue of accurate and concise PPTW to ensure that work is properly authorised and interfaces/isolations are managed.
  • Regular auditing of contractor training records to ensure operatives are competent to undertake their duties.
  • Investigate non-compliance by contractors and provide feedback and guidance to ensure future compliance.
  • Demonstrate and re-enforce the Local Rules and associated controls put in place for the work area.
  • Review risk assessments and method statements so as to confirm the required radiological controls are in place.
  • Written instructions are available for all work activities
  • Maintain daily logs etc in accordance with procedures
  • Ensuring Handover Briefings are conducted where require

EDUCATION & QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED ESSENTIAL/DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE NEEDED ESSENTIAL/DESIRABLE


  • IOSH certified or equivalent
  • Site Management Safety Training Scheme
  • Duty to Manage Asbestos
  • Radiation Protection Supervisor Essential
  • Plant operations experience in a nuclear facility
  • Knowledge and experience of Decommissioning Operations
  • Previous or existing appointment as RPS for the work area.
  • Competent in the use of Materials Handling based waste operations
