Job Title: British Sign Language (BSL) Teaching Assistant

Location: Primary School in Liverpool, UK

Type: Full-time, Permanent

An exciting opportunity has arisen at a primary school in Liverpool for a BSL Teaching Assistant to join our inclusive and supportive educational environment.

Role Overview: As a BSL Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with teachers and support staff to provide individualised support and assistance to deaf and hard of hearing students within our school community. Your role will be instrumental in facilitating communication, promoting inclusion, and enhancing the learning experience of our students.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide one-on-one and small group support to deaf and hard of hearing students, both in the classroom and during extracurricular activities.
  • Assist in the implementation of BSL-based instruction and communication strategies to support student learning and engagement.
  • Foster positive relationships with students, promoting their confidence, independence, and social integration.
  • Collaborate with teachers to adapt curriculum materials and learning activities to meet the specific needs of deaf and hard of hearing students.
  • Support students in developing their BSL skills, language acquisition, and communication abilities.
  • Assist with administrative tasks, classroom organisation, and the preparation of learning resources as needed.

Requirements:

  • Proficiency in British Sign Language (BSL) at a level appropriate for supporting communication in a primary school setting.
  • Previous experience working with deaf and hard of hearing individuals, preferably in an educational or support capacity.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport and establish positive relationships with students and colleagues.
  • Patience, empathy, and a genuine passion for supporting the needs of diverse learners.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team, collaborating with colleagues to meet the needs of individual students.
  • Relevant qualifications or training in BSL and/or deaf education are desirable but not essential.
  • Hold an enhanced DBS on the update service or be willing to undertake a new one.
