This role is for a senior finance leader seeking a position beyond that of a normal NHS financial management role. The individual will be an astute leader who possesses significant understanding of, and ability to, apply corporate and commercial accounting principles. The Associate Director of Commercial Finance will form part of the PPU board and will report to the Unit Director. With the support of the Director of the unit and Director of Financial Performance, the successful candidate will set the financial strategy, maintain a healthy and sustainable budget statement (applying commercial and NHS accounting principles), critically appraise and challenge business proposals, and will support high-level negotiation with business-to-business (B2B) customers (e.g., private medical insurers, international embassies). Lead the financial strategy, maintain a strong grip of operational financial control. Develop productive partnership working with other areas to drive the commercial growth strategy profitably. To drive improvements in financial productivity always maintaining a commercial mindset. Provide leadership and direction to finance team ensuring they strictly adhere to good financial management principles. Lead annual budget setting. Support senior leaders with financial grip within their areas of budgetary responsibility. To support commercial propositions and maintain responsibility for the financial management of key contracts. Lead on driving enhancements to the financial reporting. Lead on the development of financial benefits realisation. Form productive working relationships and exert influence (often informal) with key Group interfaces.

Strong grip of commercial financial practices incl. managing a profitable P& L statement according to IFRS principles. Expert ability to provide advice and support for all financial and accounting queries. Ability to challenge assumptions, and articulate alternative interpretations, scenarios and strategies tactfully and persuasively. Manage workload to achieve results and meet deadlines, understanding what motivates people to perform and be able to gain the respect and support of other staff and leaders. QualificationsEssential
Professional qualification in accountancy (CIMA, ACA, CIPFA, ACCA). Experience of working in a senior finance role, advising Executive Directors and other senior management. Expert knowledge gained through further postqualification specialist training or experience. Evidence of maintaining and developing technical accounting expertise and of staying up to date with current accounting rules since qualification.

Experience of business partnering, supporting senior managers and/ or directors in service developments. Demonstrable evidence of leading sound financial management processes for billing, treasury and credit control with minimal debt provision Experience of using complex financial models for assessing risk and informing decision-making. Experience in making or advising on complex decisions involving financial risk. Demonstrable positive negotiation outcomes involving large and often imbalanced negotiation partners Experience of leading on large business cases or developments and assisting internal customers in understanding the assumptions and risks inherent in those business cases. Experience of having worked with large, complicated sources of information, drawing inferences and developing strategy on the basis of the analysis. Experience presenting complex financial information to non-financial managers and directors. Evidence of having worked for a large commercial organisation responsible for complicated negotiation, billing and credit control arrangements. Understand the concepts underpinning the development of a commercial strategy and the elements which can be manipulated to gain competitive advantage. Strategic financial planning and problem-solving taking responsibility for policy and service development as well as financial reporting.
Desirable
NHS and/or PPU financial management experience. Evidenced relationship management of embassies and/or Private Medical Insurers.
