We currently have two Band 6 Orthoptist posts being advertised. This particular post is a fixed Term 12 month post to cover secondment for an existing Team member. Orthoptists are an integral to the department as we move forward in advancing the role of Orthoptists. This is a Band 6 post, however, we will consider Band 5/6 based on experience. Newly qualified orthoptist applications will be considered with appropriate mentorship provided if selected. We have 3 ambitious and enthusiastic Paediatric & Strabismus consultants and who are leading the way in Ophthalmology. They are hugely supportive of the Orthoptic team which is allowing us to strive to achieve more as a Team. In the wider Ophthalmology Team, we have many other sub speciality Ophthalmology Consultants who work closely with Orthoptists in specialist clinics and extended roles. There will be opportunities for training in this.
Royal Free London Ophthalmology have 5 main Hospital sites. This post will be based at Barnet Hospital, Edgware Hospital & Chase Farm Hospital.Main duties of the jobYou will have opportunity to gain valuable experience in a well-supported environment, working with cases in the following: Paediatric strabismus, Neuro ophthalmology and Adult oculomotility. You will also be working as part of a specialist multidisciplinary team and will be involved in the relevant MDT meetings. You will be encouraged to participate in clinical governance and audit activities within the team. To possess an Orthoptic degree or diploma. State registered with HCPC
Skills and aptitudesEssential
To have specialist training through CPD To be able to show good working relationships at all levels and to work as part of a multidisciplinary team or independently. To be able to work under pressure in a busy environment. To be able to consistently communicate effectively with patients and staff at all levels in a professional and respectful manner The ability to handle difficult situations calmly and effectively to deal with patients, tactfully, efficiently and with empathy.
Desirable
To have at least 2 years' experience or equivalent in all aspects of clinical Orthoptics involving specialist services. Demonstrate knowledge and clinical skills relevant to a shared care services. To have good presentation skills for formal and informal teaching of undergraduate and post graduates, and audit. To have knowledge of research methodology and willing to contribute to research within the department
Work ExperienceEssential
Post graduation experience in all aspects of clinical Orthoptics involving specialist services. Experience of teaching student Orthoptists /doctors /pre-registration optometrists /nurses etc Evidence of CPD
Desirable
Demonstrate knowledge and clinical skills relevant to Orthoptics in extended roles.
