As a junior sister/ charge nurse you will be required to have well developed triage skills and experience coordinating different areas of the emergency department including the resuscitation areas.As well as an 8 bedded resuscitation area, our department has a co-located Urgent Care Centre, a children's Emergency Department, CDU and SDEC service.We are also a Trauma Unit receiving trauma patients from across Hertfordshire and North London. We provide our own accredited emergence care course both adults and children's. Adult nurses have the opportunity to attend both courses. Both courses include level 1 trauma and can be taken at both degree and masters levels.We recognise that training and development opportunities are vital for a happy and competent workforce. This is why we have an ED specific Clinical Practice Education (CPE) team dedicated to the development of our nurses to support a modern career framework. You will be supported every step of the way by our senior nurses, the CPE team and your colleagues.We offer a variety of development opportunities which include, but are not limited to:Protected Supernumerary periodUniversity Accredited Emergency Care Course (in both Adults & Paediatrics)Advanced Life Support (ALS) and/or Advanced Paediatric Life Support (APLS)Advanced Trauma Life Support / ATNCSupport with completing the Level 1 RCN National Curriculum and Competency Framework for Emergency Nursing competenciesMain duties of the jobAs a Junior Sister/Charge Nurse you will be required to support the senior and junior team in ensuring the needs of our patients are met through the delivery of high quality care. The role involves working as part of a large multidisciplinary team including the ED medical team, clinical practice educators safeguarding, mental health liaison team and clinical specialties. The Junior Sister/Charge Nurse works clinically including unsocial hours and will be expected to work competently in all areas of the Emergency Department as well as being able to independently take charge of them.The Junior Sister/Charge Nurse will assist their Team leader with managing their own team of nurses and ensuring they meet their potential.As a band 6 Junior sister charge nurse in our busy Emergency Department, you will have the opportunity to work in all areas including children's ED to increase your skill set and competencyYou will be activity involved in retention and recruitment. We also offer part-time positions and flexible working.Job descriptionJob responsibilitiesTo be responsible for the unsupervised assessment of patient care needsand the development, implementation and evaluation of plans of care,ensuring high standards of evidence based care using a defined model ofcare.To undertake all nursing procedures in accordance with Trust policies andensure that these procedures and policies are understood and adhered toby all staff, within own management responsibility.To communicate with patients and significant others with empathy andreassurance regarding, assessment, care and treatment.To maintain accurate and comprehensive nursing records using appropriate documentation.To facilitate early discharge planning enabling appropriate arrangements to be in place for patients leaving hospital, making referrals and providinginformation to community services, as required, in order to achieve a safeand timely discharge from hospital.Ensure safe custody and administration of drugs according to The RoyalFree London NHS Foundation Trust policy and procedures, including intravenous medication where appropriate.Supervise junior staff, or unqualified staff, in all aspects of care.
