Weardale RailwayWeardale Railway is seeking an Assistant General Manager to support the General Manager with the running of its 18-mile long heritage line running from Bishop Auckland to Stanhope. The Railway has a small permanent workforce, including workshop, track maintenance and operational staff as well as a volunteer workforce of around 50.The Weardale Railway was acquired by The Auckland Project in March 2020. The Weardale Railway Trust has been a constant throughout the heritage life of the railway and remains the key partner, supplying volunteer labour as well as operating the heritage service. A programme of special events supplements the heritage service and is marketed as part of the wider TAP visitor attractions in Bishop Auckland.RoleThe Weardale Railway is seeking an experienced Assistant General Manager will assist the General Manager with responsibility for the day to day operation of an 18-mile long heritage line running from Bishop Auckland to Stanhope in County Durham.This role requires someone who has proven rail experience, with a can-do attitude, and who takes responsibility for getting tasks done in a safe and compliant manner. You should be an experienced leader and a team player, used to working with people to get the very best from them. The post holder should be an excellent communicator who understands the importance of building and nurturing relationships with our vast network of stakeholders including our neighbours along the 18 miles of line.In line with the essential criteria of the post you will need to undergo and pass a Weardale Railway Company Ltd medical examination. This post will work 5/7 days as agreed with your line manager.Key ResponsibilitiesThe post-holder will be responsible for the following key deliverables:• Responsible for the delivery of the day-to-day operation of services and events, supported by the General Manager (GM)• Overseeing the compliance of the railway and the Safety Management System and all other legislative requirements, supported by the GM• Work with the Departmental Heads to ensure a regular audit of the safety management system, as well as compliance with statutory and regulatory inspections, supported by the GM• Ensuring there is a plan for the undertaking of planned maintenance work on permanent way and other infrastructure, working with TAP’s project team as required.• Assist in undertaking maintenance inspections on the traction and rolling stock.• Overseeing the Competence Management System (HOPS) ensuring all staff and volunteers are trained in accordance with our procedures and assessed as competent for all the roles they undertake.• Monitoring of the training needs for the workforce and ensuring that all required certificates of competence are current and appropriately recorded.• Assist the General Manager in monitoring the condition of all property assets which meets our compliance and regulatory requirements.• Able to drive the various traction WR utilise and undertake various operational roles when required.• Upholding the values of the Weardale Railway and leading by example.• Preparing and collating monthly updates for the General Manager.• Act as Deputy for the General Manager• Taking lead responsibilities of some functions as required with GMPerson SpecificationEssentialDesirableQualificationsNEBOSHH Certificate or equivalentManagement qualificationExperienceCan demonstrate a minimum of 5 years previous experience of working on a railway in an Operations role (heritage or mainline).Experience of operating Railway Safety Management Systems and a thorough understanding of all relevant Health and Safety legislation to operation of a railway.Ability to priorities, work under pressure and deliver to agreed deadlines and within safety parameters.Excellent communicator who can manage working with people from a range of backgroundsExcellent relationship-building, negotiation, interpersonal skills, who can nurture colleagues to get the best from themAble to demonstrate strong commercial awareness skills and experience.Experience of planning and delivering large-scale events to budget and income projections.Is willing to undertake any training that is required to maintain existing qualifications or to gain further competencies as required by the organisation.Flexible approach to hours, including work at weekends, school holidays, evenings and public holidays and in the event of emergencies.Able to travel independently around the local area.Able to pass WR Ltd company medical examination (including for colour blindness).Commitment to uphold and promote the vision, values and behaviours of the railway.Experience of working in volunteer-based organisation, particularly leading teams of volunteers.SkillsAttention to detail and accuracyAttention to Health & Safety RegulationsAbility to work to deadlines under pressureExcellent numeracy, spoken and written communication skillsAbility to follow and to lead procedures and instructionsProven strong organisation & problem solving skillsPersonal AttributesBe professional and hard working with an enthusiastic approach to learningMaintain confidentiality and demonstrate professional integrity at all timesA positive team playerHighly motivated and flexibleHow to ApplyApply for this role by downloading and completing an application form from and emailing this to ##### date: Tuesday 2nd April 2024 at MidnightWe are unable to accept CV’s as application.
