Warehouse Work: Your Gateway to Fulfillment, Growth, and Job Security

Posted by: Sharifa Bakhtani | Aug 3, 2023

From the moment you step foot into a bustling warehouse, you'll find yourself immersed in a dynamic environment where every day brings new challenges and rewards. In this blog post, we'll delve into the reasons why choosing to be a warehouse worker can be a game-changer for your professional journey.

Warehouse workers are an integral part of global logistics - without them, it would be impossible for companies to get their goods to their consumers, be it other businesses (B2B) or customers (B2C). With the demand for warehouse jobs increasing by 40% in 2023, there is a large range of growth opportunities and flexibility, for example, many entry-level jobs in the industry offer training in a variety of different skills like forklift operation.

Demand for Warehouse Jobs

As of 2019, a yearly average of around 215,000 individuals were employed by warehouse and storage facilities in the UK and in 2020, during COVID, the warehouse sector was still rapidly growing with over 100,000 new warehouse jobs being created. Now, warehouse jobs are more in demand than ever as the number of warehouses worldwide is predicted to reach 180,000 by 2025. At the moment, we have over 4000 warehouse roles just in the UK alone and over 300 just in London - https://bit.ly/3O7SjHa

Benefits of Working in a Warehouse

And no, I don’t mean the benefits that come with every job such as the entitled 20 days holidays or “competitive salary” - whatever that means. Let’s look at the specific benefits that come with working in a warehouse.

Pay

The starting salary for entry-level / trainee warehouse workers is £21,000 with the average salary in the UK for warehouse workers being around £23,000. As you work your way up the ladder and progress in your warehouse role, more experienced workers make up to £30,000 annually. Considering most roles don’t ask for previous experience or qualifications, it’s worth noting that the average salary offered is quite appealing. This brings me to my next point…

No Experience needed

Most warehouse roles (excluding those such as warehouse manager or warehouse supervisor) don’t require many qualifications or experience due to the ongoing training provided on-site. This means whether you’re looking for a part-time role during the Summer or if you’re looking for a full-time role and want to work your way up the ladder - warehouse jobs are the perfect role for you!

Fitness

Many of the warehouse jobs will require you to be standing, moving or even lifting and while this might be difficult at the beginning, over time, it’s an easy way to keep fit during the day. This way, if you haven’t got time for the gym or haven’t got the motivation to go, at least you’re staying fit during the shift you work!

Career Advancement

Okay, okay, I know career advancement is a benefit of most jobs in most sectors but it also applies to the warehouse sector so I can’t help but mention it. Some warehouses offer free training programs you can take advantage of to help yourself move up the ladder to positions such as supervisor, QA, and even manager.

Flexibility

Many warehouse jobs are either 0-hour contracts or allow for you to pick up and drop shifts to match your availability. This means during holidays you can decide to pick up fewer shifts and during tougher times, you can pick up more shifts and therefore a higher salary.

Risks of Working in a Warehouse

Now it would just be biased if I didn’t mention any risks that come with working in a warehouse.

Injury

While working in a warehouse there is always a risk of getting badly injured, these injuries are normally caused by heavy lifting and moving equipment. Although the risk of being injured comes with pretty much any job, it is more likely in a warehouse due to the environment. To avoid these risks, always follow safety rules in the warehouse!

Lack of interaction

Working in a warehouse is the opposite of working in customer service. Working in customer service, you’d be interacting with customers and people all day whereas working in a warehouse you’re more than likely to spend the majority of the day just getting on with work in a loud environment which further limits the chances of communication. If you’re introverted and prefer to not communicate with customers, this could easily be an advantage.
