What is a career pivot?
A career pivot is simply taking a different career path from the one you’re currently on. The question is, which type of career pivot is right for you?
How to make a career pivot?
The side hustle
Got some doubts lingering at the back of your mind? Try this potential new career path as a side hustle first so you can test it out as well as the market whilst being able to keep going with your current job in the meantime and the income that it brings with it.
Build your personal brand
Building the foundation for your personal brand can really help when it comes to showcasing your skills and experience to give you a jumping start. You could do this through:
- Your own website page
- An instagram account
- Digital portfolio
Transferrable skills
Having a set of skills that can be transferred to the new career you want to pivot into will make the whole process a lot easier. Start by listing out your transferrable skills and see what they match up to or the career that you’re looking to transfer in to.
Self-reflection
Start with self-reflection and ask yourself the important questions like; why do I want this career move? Can I do anything in my current career to get what I’m looking for? What resources or connections do I have that I can use to make this easier?
Do your research
Take the time to look into your desired job role to ensure it’s something you can see yourself doing in the future otherwise you may come to regret it. See if it’s possible to speak to someone that’s currently doing that role and ask them some questions about it.
Immerse yourself in the industry
Follow relevant Instagram and LinkedIn accounts, sign up to newsletters to keep up to date with the latest industry news and, maybe even try some free courses that are relevant.
Refresh your CV and online presence
If you’re looking to take a completely different career path then it might be time to update your LinkedIn profile to switch the focus to your new career venture.
The same goes for your CV, tailor your CV to your desired job role, but do keep in mind that may mean gaining as much experience as you can.
