Senior Physicist – Instrumentation Development (Full-Time, Permanent)

Location: York, UK
Sector: Advanced Scientific Instrumentation | Electron Optics | Surface Science

A leading R&D-focused organisation in the scientific instrumentation sector is seeking a Senior Physicist to join its dynamic team of scientists and engineers. This is a full-time, permanent position offering long-term career progression, training, and the opportunity to work on cutting-edge projects in electron-optical instrumentation.

The Role:

You will be central to the design, development, and testing of high-performance instrumentation—such as scanning and transmission electron microscopes (SEM/TEM)—in a hands-on, experimental capacity. With a strong foundation in physics, you’ll contribute to both product development and broader scientific research with commercial applications.

Responsibilities:

* Plan and conduct experiments aimed at product innovation and technical advancement.

* Design and prototype components for electron-optical systems.

* Work in both cleanroom and lab environments on advanced surface science instrumentation.

* Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams and contribute to knowledge-sharing efforts.

* Present findings internally and externally, including at international conferences or via publications.

Requirements:

* MSc or PhD in Physics, Electron Optics, Surface Science, or related disciplines.

* Demonstrated experience in hands-on research and instrumentation development.

* Strong grasp of physics fundamentals and mathematical modelling.

* Practical experience with UHV systems, SEM/TEM, or related equipment is highly desirable.

* Excellent communication skills and a methodical, self-driven approach.

What’s on Offer:

* Competitive salary with annual reviews.

* Bonus scheme, pension, and additional benefits.

* Access to continued professional development, mentoring, and technical training.

* Opportunity to become a subject-matter expert in a highly specialised field.

* A collaborative environment with a passion for scientific discovery and disruptive technology.

This is a rare opportunity to play a key role in developing next-generation instrumentation at a company with decades of experience and a forward-thinking culture
