Principal Software Engineer (Fully Remote)

About the Role As our business continues to grow, we are looking for another Principal Engineer to join our highly motivated team. This will mean helping set architectural direction so that products are not only fit for purpose initially, but also provide a suitable base for ongoing development and upgrade. The person filling this role will have at least five years of experience building and improving world class solutions, which include data analysis and visualisation. You will be an experienced cloud developer and understand how to put together performant and secure cloud-based solutions which make use of cutting-edge cloud technology. With a focus on team productivity, you will have experience of being the technical lead on projects. This will include setting technical direction, evaluating 3rd party tools for inclusion in the platform and also mentoring more junior staff to ensure team productivity. You will have a good understanding of effective team processes such as code review and automated testing. As a creative thinker with high levels of self-motivation, you ll be able to communicate effectively across all levels of the business, and will bring your desire to build, test and fix things to our constantly evolving and fast paced business. We re building modern, scalable cloud-native applications using: Backend : PHP 8.Frontend : Vue 3 + TypeScript Databases : MySQL (Aurora), DynamoDB, and other NoSQL technologies Infrastructure : AWS (fully hosted), Serverless Framework, and Terragrunt for infrastructure-as-code (IaC) CI/CD : GitHub Actions / BitBucket pipelines and other tools to enable automated testing and deployment We value strong experience with application architecture, but we re also looking for someone who understands the bigger picture including cloud infrastructure, DevOps, and how to build reliable systems in production environments. 5+ years of hands-on experience building and improving modern, full-stack web applications Deep knowledge of Object Oriented Programming (PHP experience a plus but not essential) and JavaScript/TypeScript (Vue.js specifically a plus but Angular or React also accepted) Experience designing and implementing cloud-native applications in AWS Comfortable working with both relational and NoSQL databases A track record of technical leadership, mentoring engineers, and setting engineering standards Experience in data analysis and visualisation, especially in the context of commercial or insurance data, is a strong plus.
