We are looking for a skilled and proactive Highway Engineer to join our Highways and Infrastructure team at a local authority in the East of England. This is a permanent, full-time position, offering a hybrid working model with 2 to 3 days per week in the office.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the design, delivery, and management of highway improvement and maintenance schemes, contributing to the safe, efficient, and sustainable operation of the local highway network.

Key Responsibilities:

Develop and manage highway improvement schemes, from feasibility through to detailed design and construction.

Undertake inspections and assessments of highway assets, identifying maintenance needs and planning interventions.

Prepare technical drawings, specifications, and cost estimates using design software (e.g., AutoCAD).

Manage and coordinate contractors and consultants on-site.

Ensure compliance with relevant legislation, technical standards, and local policies.

Engage with stakeholders including members of the public, elected officials, developers, and utility companies.

Support the delivery of Local Transport Plan (LTP) priorities and sustainability objectives.

Essential Skills and Experience:

Degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent experience.

Proven experience in highway design, maintenance, or project delivery.

Knowledge of relevant design standards (e.g., DMRB, Manual for Streets) and legislation.

Proficient in design and project management software (e.g., AutoCAD, Civils 3D, MS Project).

Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills.

Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Full UK driving licence.

Desirable:

Chartered or Incorporated status (or working towards) with ICE or CIHT.

Experience working within local government or public sector highways.

Knowledge of drainage, traffic management, and active travel design
