Base Location: Aldershot | Covering the South East and South West
On behalf of our client, we are seeking an experienced and conservation-focused Heritage Building Surveyor to join a well-established team on a 9-month fixed-term contract. This important role involves conducting quadrennial inspections and preparing high-quality reports for a portfolio of Grade II listed buildings and military accommodation. The successful candidate will play a central role in the preservation and maintenance of historically significant assets across a large estate.

The Role
This is a home-based position requiring regular travel throughout the South East and South West of England, with Aldershot as the designated reporting base. Occasional overnight stays may be necessary depending on site locations. The role involves inspecting a variety of listed properties—primarily Grade II—and providing conservation-led reports to inform asset planning, statutory compliance, and maintenance strategies.

Key Responsibilities

Carry out quadrennial inspections of Grade II listed buildings and residential units, assessing structural integrity and conservation requirements
Evaluate traditional materials, building fabric, and historical detailing with sensitivity to heritage value
Produce structured, high-quality reports in line with Historic England and local authority expectations
Offer clear recommendations for repair, ongoing maintenance, and long-term conservation planning
Liaise with internal teams, planning authorities, conservation officers, architects, and heritage bodies
Promote conservation best practice and sustainability across the estate
Keep abreast of changes in legislation, technical standards, and innovation in heritage managementEssential Criteria

Degree or postgraduate qualification in Building Conservation, Historic Building Surveying, Architecture, Heritage Management, or a related discipline
Professional membership of IHBC, RICS (with Building Conservation Accreditation), RIBA, or CIOB
Demonstrable experience surveying and reporting on historic buildings, preferably within large or complex estates
Deep understanding of traditional construction materials and conservation principles
Familiarity with legislation governing listed buildings, planning processes, and consents
Strong written and verbal communication skills with an ability to produce accurate, clear technical reports
