Scope of Groundworks – External Works
These are typically finishing tasks in the groundworks phase of construction and include:
* Laying slabs – flagstones, paving slabs for walkways or patios.
* Installing kerbs – concrete or stone kerbs for roadways, car parks, or footpaths.
* Setting edgings – usually smaller boundary restraints for paving or landscaping.
📜 Required Qualifications
Depending on the machinery or scope, the following certifications are typically required:
* CSCS Card (Construction Skills Certification Scheme)
✅ Required for almost all site workers to prove basic health & safety training.
* CPCS (Construction Plant Competence Scheme)
✅ Needed if operating plant machinery like a mini digger, dumper, or roller.
* NPORS (National Plant Operators Registration Scheme)
✅ An alternative to CPCS for plant/machine operators. Increasingly accepted on most UK construction sites.
👷 Typical Groundworker Role (with CSCS + CPCS or NPORS)
A groundworker in this role would be expected to:
* Read drawings/levels to set kerbs or slabs correctly.
* Operate machinery (if qualified) to dig, level, or compact surfaces.
* Mix and pour concrete or mortar for bedding/haunching.
* Use tools like whacker plates, laser levels, saws, etc
