Job Title: Ecologist
Location: South of England
Salary: £26,000 - £36,000
Hours: Full time – Monday – Friday 9:00-17:00 (midweek and weekend overtime available)
About the role
We’re looking for an experienced and dedicated Ecologist to join our growing environmental team.
As an Ecologist, you will play a key role in delivering ecological surveys, assessments, and advice across a variety of projects. You’ll be responsible for supporting planning applications, ensuring compliance with environmental legislation, and helping clients minimise ecological impact while promoting biodiversity. The role offers a mix of fieldwork and reporting, working closely with project teams to integrate ecological considerations into sustainable project delivery.
Key Responsibilities:
* Conduct field surveys to assess local wildlife, habitats, and ecosystems, ensuring compliance with environmental legislation and guidelines.
* Carry out ecological assessments for development projects, including Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) and habitat surveys.
* Identify and monitor protected species and habitats, providing recommendations for mitigation or enhancement measures.
* Prepare and deliver detailed ecological reports, providing data and analysis to clients, contractors, and regulatory bodies.
* Advise on biodiversity and habitat restoration strategies, ensuring projects align with sustainability goals and environmental regulations.
* Collaborate with project teams, including engineers, planners, and contractors, to integrate ecological considerations into design and construction processes.
* Ensure compliance with relevant environmental laws, including wildlife protection and habitat conservation regulations.
* Assist in the preparation of habitat management plans, biodiversity action plans, and conservation strategies for long-term environmental protection.

Qualifications and Skills:
* Membership of CIEEM.
* Level 2 Class Licence for bat surveys.
* Licences for other protected species surveys.
* Experience in EPS Mitigation Licensing.
* Proficiency in GIS mapping.
* Understanding of relevant protected species planning policies, including the NPPF and local plans, in relation to development.
Essential Requirements:
* A relevant degree in ecology or a related field, OR at least two years of experience in ecological consultancy.
* Demonstrated experience in fieldwork, including habitat and bat surveys.
* A solid track record in office-based consultancy tasks such as reporting and mapping.
* Level 1 Class Licence for bat surveys, with other survey licences welcomed.
* Strong botanical identification skills.
* Experience in Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) Assessments and using the UKHab classification.
* Capability to conduct regular fieldwork.
