We are seeking a motivated and experienced Ecologist to join our dynamic Environment and Infrastructure team within a local council in the East of England. This permanent, full-time role offers the opportunity to work closely with highways engineers and flood risk management teams, providing ecological design advice and support across a range of projects.
You will play a key role in integrating biodiversity and ecological best practices into infrastructure design and flood mitigation schemes, helping the council meet environmental targets and legal obligations. The role involves a balance of office-based work (2 to 3 days per week) and field/site work as required.
Key Responsibilities:
Provide ecological input and design support to highways and flood risk engineering teams.
Carry out Preliminary Ecological Appraisals (PEAs), protected species assessments, and habitat surveys.
Advise on mitigation strategies and biodiversity enhancements for infrastructure projects.
Review planning applications and support the development of environmental and ecological assessments (EIA, HRA, etc.).
Liaise with internal and external stakeholders including planning officers, environmental regulators, and contractors.
Monitor compliance with ecological mitigation measures and conditions.
Keep up to date with relevant legislation, policies, and best practices.
Essential Skills and Experience:
Degree in Ecology, Environmental Science, or a related subject.
Experience working in local government or consultancy in an ecological role.
Strong knowledge of UK wildlife legislation, planning policy, and protected species licensing.
Ability to provide clear, pragmatic ecological advice to multidisciplinary teams.
Good report writing and communication skills.
Full UK driving licence and ability to attend sites across the region.
Desirable:
Membership of CIEEM (or working toward it).
Experience with GIS mapping tools.
Knowledge of SuDS and green infrastructure integration
