Based: Cardiff

Salary: £18,779 – £20,089 per annum (Depending on experience) (£23,474 – £25,111 FTE)

Term: Fixed Term from July 1st, 2025, until July 31st, 2026

Hours: Part-time, 28 hours per week, Tuesday – Friday 9:00am-4:00pm with some flexibility for the right candidate

Age Connects Cardiff & the Vale is looking for individuals who can support older people to help them maximise their income through completing benefit checks and applications for benefit entitlement.

Although no formal qualifications are required, this role is ideally suited to someone who has knowledge and experience of benefit entitlement, particularly for older people. The Benefits Advisor will have the ability to build strong relationships and trust with clients, colleagues and other professionals. They will be expected to work independently and on their own initiative within clearly defined organizational policies and procedures.

Job purpose:

The Benefits Advisor will be responsible for providing benefit support, advice and practical help in completing applications to older people in their own homes and over the telephone.

This job description outlines the key performance indicators of, and output required from the Benefits Advisor. It is not a definitive list, and the role may well change and evolve over time.

Main duties and responsibilities:

* Responsible for internal and external communication between Clients, DWP, Local Authority, Health Professionals, Family Members, Carers, and the General Public.

* Building relationships and trust with Clients to encourage the sharing of sensitive and personal information.

* Interpreting and articulating any information shared, ensuring the integrity of any application.

* Offering virtual appointments or home visits to assist with completion of benefit applications.

* Building strong relationships with other professionals and agencies in order to deliver a seamless service to Clients.

* Verifying income and documentation for external agencies.

* Provide timely, accurate and up-to-date information which may include researching qualifying benefits

* Will be responsible for setting up 3 local benefit advice events and attending community events and outreach sessions.

* Inputting monitoring information into the Welfare Rights Service Database, Charity Log, in a timely manner.

* Contribute to completing monitoring reports.

* Provide training and mentoring support to the Trainee Benefits Adviser.

* Keeping up to date with learning and development, ensuring current legislation, codes of practice and guidance are followed.

* Take part in staff meetings as and when required.

* To be responsible for your own health and safety and the health and safety of others.

* To ensure you follow the company’s policies and processes with regard to equal opportunities and discrimination.

* Undertake any other reasonable duties deemed appropriate by your manager.

Person specification:

Essential

Educated to GCSE (or equivalent) standard and be able to demonstrate excellent English language skills

Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Commitment to undertake/participate in appropriate training

Good understanding of the benefits system

Experience of completing benefit applications forms

Experience of working unsupervised whilst being a good team player

Driving licence and access to a car, and be willing to travel throughout the area

Good IT skills with knowledge of Microsoft Office 365

Flexible approach to work and a can do attitude.
