About the Role:
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Highway Project Manager to join a local authority in the South of England, supporting the delivery of a major transport improvement programme under the Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP). While experience with BSIP projects is advantageous, it is not essential-the priority is for a candidate with a strong background in highway engineering and construction project management.
This is a full-time role, with 2 days per week required on-site, working closely with internal teams, contractors, and key stakeholders to ensure timely and cost-effective delivery of complex infrastructure schemes.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead and manage the delivery of highway and public realm improvement schemes, including those within the BSIP programme.
Coordinate multi-disciplinary teams, consultants, and contractors to ensure effective project planning, risk management, and delivery.
Oversee budgets, schedules, and contract administration (e.g., NEC contracts).
Act as the main point of contact for project-related queries, providing regular updates to senior managers and councillors.
Ensure all works comply with relevant health & safety regulations, design standards, and statutory obligations.
Engage with local communities, stakeholders, and transport partners to support scheme development and implementation.
Essential Skills and Experience:
Significant experience in managing highway infrastructure or civil engineering projects, ideally within a local authority setting.
Strong understanding of construction processes, highways design standards (e.g., DMRB, Manual for Streets), and procurement methods.
Proven track record of delivering complex infrastructure schemes on time and within budget.
Excellent communication, leadership, and stakeholder management skills.
Familiarity with CDM regulations and contract management (e.g., NEC3/4).
Ability to work autonomously and manage competing priorities.
Desirable:
Experience supporting or delivering sustainable transport or BSIP-related projects.
Relevant qualifications in Civil Engineering, Project Management (e.g., APM, PRINCE2), or equivalent experience.
Membership of a professional body such as ICE, CIHT, or APM
