The setting caters for young people at both KS3 and 4 age with no more than 10 pupils per class. The curriculum is based on core and foundation elements of the national curriculum with extra vocational elements as well. Teachers differentiate to meet the needs of each young person and as one of the new SEN Teaching Assistant staff you will need to support the teacher in the successful delivery of lessons and occasionally help to plan and prep activities and tasks. Some pupils will need 1:1 emotional or learning intervention.

All pupils have an Education Health Care Plan (EHCP) for Autism. This means that pupils can sometimes display social, emotional or behavioural difficulties. Many have some form of sensory need as well such as colour, smell, movement or sound that triggers anxiety. These triggers will need to be monitored and hopefully prevented by using appropriate strategies. Some pupils also have communication needs although mild. Over time your role as a SEN Teaching Assistant will be to assist learners to be able to self-regulate and become more confident and independent meaning they are able to engage in work more and become more active citizens after high school.

The role:


The role is working as a SEMH Teaching Assistant at a secondary special needs school in Salford. You will be supporting a year 10 pupil on a 1:1 basis that that has an EHCP for special needs including Social, Emotional & Mental Health difficulties (SEMH). The pupil has been a non-attender for some time however is now on a phased reintegration back in to the school. They have had significant trauma in their background and suffer from anxiety, depression, self harm and display challenging behaviour in the form of defiant reactions. They have poor interactions with staff and pupils as well.

The new SEMH Teaching Assistant will need to build a relationship with the pupil quickly based on honesty, mutual respect and consistency of approach. You will need to allow the pupil space to engage and time to manage their emotions while setting clear boundaries. You will need lots of empathy, patience and resilience as well as the understanding that things take time and this role may have a few up and downs before making real progress.

The school is a secondary special needs school & college that caters for young people aged 11-19 with SEN including those with Autism, MLD, Complex Needs and SEMH. They are rated Good with Outstanding features and staff report high satisfaction levels with working there due to the highly organised and supportive management team. They are based in a new build with excellent facilities to cater for their pupils' needs including break out spaces for pastoral support as well sensory and therapy rooms for others with more complex needs. The curriculum follows the national curriculum where possible however many pupils are working at lower than expected levels for their age and will be grouped with other pupils at a similar level of attainment. There are strong links with other schools, outside agencies and parents and as the new SEMH Teaching Assistant you will be expected to maintain positive internal and external school relationships.
