Did you, also, know that there are over 800,000 professional engineers in the UK? Once you graduate, you will earn more than other graduates.

To give but one example, the average pay for a Software Engineer is £20.00 per hour which  £35,266 per year. On the other hand, the annual salary for civil engineering usually starts around £23,500, rising to £26,500 with two years' experience.

On-site Renewable Energy Operator

Jobs in The Artonish Estate Company Limited

£45,000 - £45,000 /Annum
 Permanent
Posted about : 7 days ago
 Expires in: 21 days

Benefits: Plus House, 4x4 and other benefits

On-site Renewable Energy Operator Circa £45k plus benefits including; House, 4 x 4, Phone and Pension. Based on The Ardtornish Estate Company in Morven     Over the past 20 years The Ardtornish Estate Company has grown their renewable energy business to include five hydropower systems, totalling 3.4 MW of capacity, and two biomass boilers that provide heat to several of the estate’s properties. This energy business has become a significant contributor to the organisation’s success and therefore this is an important role to ensure the on-going performance of the organisation.   The energy business manages these two biomass boilers as well as five hydro power systems which provide 70-80% of the company’s annual revenue. Four of the hydro schemes are operated in cascade and export power through the same grid connection point. The fifth scheme is located approximately 2 miles away.    The aim of this role is: To ensure that the company’s five hydropower systems are operating as expected on a daily basis. To maintain daily operating records for the hydropower systems and biomass boilers. To coordinate with management and external contractors to service and manage faults as and when they occur. Duties and responsibilities   Hydropower Operations The primary responsibility of this role is to maximise the generation of the hydropower assets. This requires daily checks on each hydropower system with regular monitoring of the turbines, in-takes and pipelines. Respond to turbine alarms / outages and conduct basic fault-finding, with support from the wider team, to remedy any problems. Follow standard procedures for onsite maintenance of the hydropower systems. Coordinate with specialist service contractors, while identifying potential faults/issues between service visits and reporting them before they become more serious. Conduct maintenance of the powerhouses with support from the wider estate’s team. Manage the hydropower workshop and inventory of spare parts.   Biomass Operations Monitor the woodchip levels in the biomass boiler hoppers. Monitor the ash levels in the biomass boilers and empty as required. Report faults to the specialist service company and work with them to diagnose and resolve. Wider Estate Operations The primary duty of this role is to ensure the effective operation of the hydropower and biomass systems but depending on the qualifications of the candidate there may be occasions when additional technical support is required to support the general maintenance of the estate. Qualifications   Desired qualifications and experience include: Ideally you will have hands-on, practical, mechanical and/or electrical experience operating heavy plant, electrical systems or generators. Previous experience maintaining and operating hydro power systems is highly advantageous. Professional training through a multi-craft apprenticeship scheme and/or formal engineering instruction through either degree level education, HNC or SVQs that demonstrate the candidate has the knowledge to perform engineering operations. Ability to work independently and to prioritise competing tasks. Physical requirements This is a physically demanding job, which requires a full driver’s license. There will be abnormal working hours in remote, unsupervised locations often in adverse weather conditions. Direct reports   This role has no direct reports but it is expected that the candidate will provide basic training to the wider company to ensure sufficient knowledge exists within the team to cover the operation of the hydropower systems and biomass boilers during holidays and weekends. Work with the management team and external contractors to ensure the long-term maintenance of the hydro power systems and to maximise the generation from the assets. Working conditions This is a rare opportunity to live and work in one of the most beautiful locations in the UK, with a forward thinking and expanding company. It is expected that the selected candidate will relocate to live on the estate as a rapid response to any hydro power or biomass outage is required. Accommodation will therefore be provided as part of the employment package. Normal working hours are 8am – 5pm, however, a fault or outage of a hydro power system may occur at anytime and therefore flexibility in working hours will be necessary. A 4x4 vehicle will be provided, company phone and pension scheme as part of the wider benefits package. An attractive salary is available that is dependent upon the candidate’s experience and qualifications. Location  The Estate is located 3 miles from Lochaline on the Morvern Peninsula the village has approximately 200 residents, a local shop and petrol station as well as a ferry link to Mull.
