In March 2013, after 28 years operational experience, I stepped out of my comfort zone as a clinician to the position of Clinical Risk Manager for the South-Central Ambulance Service and in September 2014 I secured a 12-month contract to the position of Patient Safety Manager for the Division of Surgery Head and Neck, (S, H&N) and in July 2015, I returned to the South-Western Ambulance Service as a practicing Paramedic enabling me to resume my studies towards a BSc Hons Degree in Paramedic Science at the UWE. Thereafter, returning to Paramedic practice in 2015, my career pathway allowed further secondment opportunities of ePCR Lead, Clinical Supervisor and Quality Lead. In 2019, due to the exacerbation of osteoarthritis, I decided to step down from operational duties after 34 years unblemished service, to utilise my patient safety skills and expert knowledge base within the Clinical Governance arena, where upon I accepted the position of Senior Patient Safety and Risk Advisor at the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals Trust, where my primary role is overseeing the Trusts incident reporting system and Corporate and Divisional risk registers. The role works closely with all the Trust's Divisions, by assisting and reviewing Risk all internal/external clinical investigations and Service Concerns; maintaining quality, compliance and completion within a timely manner. The role has allowed continual professional development by enrolling onto the Diploma in Clinical Risk and Claims Management course, allowing an increased depth of knowledge of the legal, social and political context that has given rise to Clinical Governance and its strategy to improve patient care and outcome.
