I am currently a Band 6 RN/Sister on a busy acute General Surgical ward, in which my experience of clinical skills spread over the competencies as listed below. I have been in this role for 3.5 years and previously a Band 5 on the same ward. As a ward we work within Vascular, Urology, Colorectal, Upper Gastric, EST teams and this can extend to Breast, ENT and other medical areas. I have the responsibility for taking charge of patients on the ward- assessing individual needs, having direct involvement with their investigations, managing symptoms, caring for pre and post operative patients. I undertake team ward rounds with the Surgical and Consultant teams. I provide Mentorship to students, Associate Practitioners and Preceptors as well as nursing staff. I currently am in charge of the Nursing Associate Practitioners whom are practicing whilst studying for the ward and have previously been in charge of roster writing and organising staff shifts. I assist in undertaking operational duties to maintain high standards of effective patient care and bed co-ordination in particular as the `Nurse in charge' role and this in addition to dealing with first level complaints or with complex nursing or family related situations. I also assist in co-ordinating the Nursing team and the ward in the absence of the Ward Manager/Senior Sister. I have had the opportunity to undertake audits, particularly those for `Infection Control' by taking the role of Infection Control Link Nurse for the ward and for Safety Thermometer checks -with regards to Thrombosis treatment and Sepsis protocol. The ward works alongside the Physiotherapists, OT's and Dieticians and Palliative nursing teams. As part of the Senior Nurse role, organising the social care and sometimes complex discharges of patients on the ward can be a challenging task, but I attend delays/bed meetings to assist with the priority discharges and influence bed flow. I have also had the experience of working for an agency in which I worked for various hospital settings, in particular A+E, AMU, Stroke, Respiratory, Cardiac, Orthopaedic and I have had past experience of working in medical and Rehab settings.
