I became interested in teaching while volunteering at a school and through this experience, I was inspired to choose teaching as a career. While in the classroom I enjoyed supporting children in their learning and found intrinsic value in the job in comparison to my previous post in human resources. Thus, by choosing to undertake my PGCE at Northumbria University, I have been able to develop my skills and knowledge in preparation for my own class. Through my degree and school placement, I have gained both experience and knowledge in teaching subjects in the National Curriculum. These subjects include Math, Phonics, English, Science, History, Art and ICT. Furthermore, during my school placement, I have gained experience in Key Stage 2 (Year 3), so I have developed an understanding of the methods required for effective teaching. Through my assessed lesson observations, I have been averaging grade 2 and am motivated to improve this further on my next placement. During my school placement, I have gained an appreciation that each child has their own needs as an individual and these need to be met so they can access learning in the classroom. I have understood this by providing differentiation of tasks for the children and making sure every pupil has their learning needs met. This was demonstrated in a writing session I taught in Year 3 as I provided visual aids as the developing children learned best kinesthetically and also provided auditory materials for the greater depth children as they found this method engaging for their learning. By doing so, the children within the lesson found it engaging but at the same time challenging to develop their own learning skills. Also, I have developed an understanding of the importance of learning objectives and the use of a success criteria. This enables the children to know what is expected and allows them to focus clearly on the task. Moreover, this has also assisted me as a practitioner to assess if the children met the criteria and if not what measures can be put in place to consolidate this. This leads to progression which is vital and needs to be planned consistently for the children. Within lessons, I record the progress of children and make sure those children who are struggling are provided with further support to consolidate learning before moving onto the next topic. Creativity is crucial in lessons to make it engaging and allows children to feel more motivated to learn. An example of how I incorporated creativity into a lesson was in a writing lesson where the Year 3 class had to use drama to act out scenes of a story called 'Jason and the Golden Fleece.' Furthermore, I also planned a debate in History within a Year 4 lesson where the children had to argue if they rather live in Sparta or Athens in Ancient Greece. In both these sessions, the children were enthusiastic and found it a productive and engaging learning experience.
