Scientific research project/ dissertation/placement for university:

For the completion of my dissertation I was on a 12-week placement at the Eyemouth Leisure Centre which started on the 13th of January 2020 and finished on the 16th of March due to Covid-19. The purpose of the research was to implement a supervised 8-week proprioception and balance focus training program with the combination of exercises. The aim was to evaluate if the training program can show improvements in the outcome measures comparing pre and post-test scores, the effects of the training program in relation to body composition, weight, blood pressure and heart rate. Baseline and clinical characteristics as well as pre-test assessments data were collected from older adults both males and females (n=13).

During this placement I have gained hand on experience working with older adults between the age of 60-70. I gained better organisational skills such as creating and keeping deadlines, organise testing for each participant, managing appointments, making training schedules that suited individually and in group. Also team work as I was working with a qualified physiotherapist who worked there full time and my overall project management. Problem solving and goal setting was very important as each older adults physical ability was different. I was always making sure that I was giving and receiving feedback from both the physiotherapist and the clients as well throughout my time at placement. I was also helping out with administrative tasks within the leisure centre. I have gained excellent statistical analysis and presentational skills working with Microsoft excel and SPSS statistics software. Due to this I had to give a number of presentations for my supervisor, classmates and clients as well as the physiotherapist to update them on the results and their improvements.
